Hi,
Going in first week of Jan has its pros and cons ...
I wont suggest it if you have small kids with you coz the temperatures are chilling and the snaan before the darshan can give frost bite.
But at the same time, the real gufa of mata vaishno devi is generally open during this time that you wont get very often these days.
I am not sure if its crowded at this time of the year.
if you decide against going in jan, i may suggest going in march, as the rush in march is very less coz of final exams in most children schools.

PS: dont forget to pre book ur "yatra parchi" in advance.
Jai Mata Di...

Hi, as mentioned by Bob, it obviously would be cold. Do carry woolens. Frankly, apart from starting the New Year in a pious place, there is hardly anything good about the timing.

For me late Feb and March is the best time to visit Vaishno Devi or Oct-Nov.

Hi, Jan would be cold and you'll see a lot of people, who want to begin their New Year by paying a visit to Mata Vaishno Devi. So expect, a bit of crowd.

I don't think finding accommodation will be an issue. The most important point is: At which place you are looking for accommodation - At the Bhawan or Katra?
