Madurai in Tamil Nadu
You want to cover a maximum tourist spots, not to cover dgl, mdu, pln. So better stay in palani, you can cover tourist spots in madurai, coimbatore and dindugal. It could be the center point. Really your question is not in the ideal tourist place. From palani you can visit madurai(Kodaikanal) and coimbatore(Valparai and topslip).
Kodaikanal is approximately 3 hours drive from Madurai(by bus or car). Sure, you can stay in Madurai and cover Kodai as well as Palani and Dindigul.

no problem, you can cover all the three in one day . madurai is centre point. proceed to dindigul just 60kms by excellent road (quadrilateral four road highway) . from there you can go to palani another one hour journey in the northwest direction. after visiting you can return to madurai without touching dindigul at the bye-pass road or via sempatti road from palani to madurai. more details if you want send me e mail :ksri2006@gmail.com.
