A valid point made by BS, even I advise you to visit Manali first and then Shimla. It is logical and makes sense, very common . A taxi would cost you any thing between 3500-4000 for a round trip, you are free to bargain. About hotels, there are many both in Shimla and Manali, you need to mention your budget.

Since you are a group of 8, a cab fits nicely in your scheme of things from Shimla to Manali and back. But then this thought bugs me - why are you going to Shimla first and then Manali instead, my suggestion is, head straight to Manali and then explore Shimla on your return. This will save you from a great amount of ordeal. Plan well

If you have the budget check this one - Camp Potters Hill, Shimla, it is an interesting place to stay in Shimla.
