One of the lesser-known hill stations of Tamil Nadu, Velliangiri Hills located at an altitude of 6000 ft is famous both as a popular hill station as well as a spiritual destination. While its salubrious climate is the prime attraction for the young and old, for the devotees it is the hills association with Lord Shiva that bring them here.  According to the legends, it was here Lord Shiva performed his cosmic dance on the request of his consort Umadevi (Parvati). Since then, the place is also known as Rajathagiri, Velliangiri, Dakshin Kailash or Bhoolok Kailash.

Besides, the Shiva Temple of Velliangiri in the mountain ranges of Kongunadu, the presence of the ashram of Sadaguru Jaggi Vasudev is another reason why people throng to the Velliangiri Hills. In fact if peace and tranquility is what one is looking at from a holiday, Velliangiri Hills is the place to go.

The Shiva Temple is the main attraction in the Velliangiri Hills. The linga in the temple is believed to be a swyambhu, the one which originated on its own and not the one, which is established. The temple comes alive during the Mahashivratri when thousands of devotees from different parts of the country gather here to pray and pay their respects to Lord Shiva. Of all the mountain shrines in Kongunadu, the Shiva Temple of Velliangiri in the western boundary is considered to be the most auspicious and famous. Known as Rajathagiri, Velliangiri, Dakshin Kailash or Bhoolok Kailash, this sacred spot is the place where Lord Shiva performed his cosmic dance.
