A 4-hrs drive from Chennai takes one to the holy town of Tiruvannamalai, well known for the Arunachaleswar Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and Parvati. The temple, said to be one of the largest in India, draws tourists from all over the country. It is one of the greatest Saivite shrines in India that is spread over 24 acres of land. Tiruvannamalai is just not a temple town that appeals only to the religiously inclined but it is equally popular among those looking for a break to relax, rejuvenate and recharge. Tiruvannamalai has some good ashrams, which one can visit to get a lesson in yoga, spirituality and meditation.

Tiruvannamalai was earlier known as ‘ThiruAnna Nadu’ and the president deity was known as Thiru Anna Nattu Mahadevan. This region was ruled by the Pallavas, later came the Rashtrakootas, who undertook important renovation work during the tenth century A.D. From 13th – 14th century, the Pandya kings ruled the region. Later, when Hoysalas came to power, they made Tiruvannamalai their capital.

Tiruvannamalai is 85 km south of Vellore, and out of the 100 or more temples in the area, the temple of Arunachleswar is the most famous. The temple is known for its splendid architecture.
