Ma Vaishno Devi - Holy Shrine in the Trikuta Hills

Different legends surround the origin of the Vaishno Devi shrine. According to one of them, a beautiful girl named Vaishnavi was born in the home of Ratnakar Sagar. As a young girl, she took a vow to marry Lord Rama and started praying for it. Lord Rama was impressed with her devotion but since he was faithful to his wife. He promised to return in another yuga (era). Lord Rama said that he would accept Vaishnavi if she recognized him when he came to her in a disguised form. Upon his return from Lanka, Lord Rama went to see the girl, disguised as an old monk, but she did not recognize him as Lord. Upon finding out, Vaishnavi was extremely sad. In order, to console Vaishnavi, Lord Rama said that the time would eventually come in the modern era when he would be the form of Kalki. Rama also asked Vaishnavi to meditate and set up her ashram at the base of the Trikuta Hills where her fame spread far and wide.
Holy Shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi
A tantrik demon by the name of Bhairon Nath secretly started observing Vaishnavi and was enchanted by her beauty. Upon being pursued by Bhairon Nath, Vaishnavi fled into the Trikuta Hills. Vaishnavi stopped on her way at places, which today are known as the Banganga. Charan Paduka, Adhkanwari before finally reaching the cave where the shrine exists today. Bhairon Nath continued to follow her and ultimately met his fate at the hands of the goddess who beheaded him. The severed head of the demon fell on a distant hilltop. Bhairon pleaded for mercy. The mother goddess then granted him a boon saying that every devotee who visits her temple should visit the shrine of Bhairon Nath as well, only then would the pilgrimage be complete. Vaishnavi in the meanwhile shed her human form and assumed the face of a rock to continue her meditation. Thus, the goddess can be seen in the form of a five and a half feet rock with three heads also called the Pindies. These Pindies inside the holy cave are revered by one and all.

Dedicated to the Mother Goddess or Shakti, the Shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi located at an altitude of 5300 feet in the Trikuta Hills in the Shivalik Range of the Himalayas is considered as one of the holiest sites of the Mother Goddess. The numbers of yatris or devotees who make a pilgrimage to the temple is probably second to that of Tirumala Tirupati. It is said that the skull of Mata Sati fell here while other hold that it was the arm of the Mother. Whatever, be the truth, there is however no doubt that a stone remain of a human hand, popularly known as Varad Hast (the hand that grants boons and blessings) is located inside the shrine and is probably for this reason the Mother is also known as the One who fulfills whatever Her children wish for (Moonh Maangi Muradein Poori Karne Wali Mata).

It is generally held that a visit to the holy Shrine of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi is possible only when one receives a call from the Mata herself . Hence the slogan "Maan Aap Bulandi" - which means that The Mother Herself Calls!

The first reference to the Mother Goddess is made in the epic Mahabharata when Arjuna meditated upon the Mother Goddess and sought Her blessings for victory.  It is also said that the first temple dedicated to the Mata was build by the Pandavas  at Kol Kandoli and Bhawan in reverence and gratitude for the Mother Goddess and the five stone structures located adjacent to the Trikuta Mountain and overlooking the Holy Cave are said to be the rock symbols of the five brothers.

Holy Shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi

The Holy Shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi: The shrine is located inside a holy Cave, situated at an altitude of 5200 ft in the folds of the three peaked mountain called the Trikuta Hills. Here the Devi is represented in the form of three natural rock formations called the Pindies. These Pindies are said to symbolize the three forms of Shakti or the Mother Goddess- Maha Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, beauty and prosperity; Maha Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge, art and learning and; Maha Kali, the destroyer of all evil.

At the mouth of the tunnel leading to the cave are the symbols of Lord Ganesh, Vakra Tunda, Surya Dev and Chandra Dev. One has to crawl their way into the cave, which is 98 ft. long. An image of Lord Hanuman as Launkra Beer is located nearby. Visitors have to cross Launkra Beer through water. After the Launkra Beer point, the cave opens out and on the top can be seen the countless heads of Shesh Nag. Below Shesh Nag are the Shankh, Chakra, Gada and a Lotus Flower. On the roof of the cave are the symbols of the five Pandavas, who are believed to have built the cave. Also, seen is the Sapt Rishi, udders of the divine cow, Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva and Parvati.

Before offering prayers at the shrine, devotees take bath in the holy waters of the Ban Ganga in the bathing chambers at the Bhawan.

Ban Ganga

Ban Ganga: On the way to the shrine from Katra is Ban Ganga where the goddess reportedly quenched her thirst by shooting an arrow into the earth from which water sprang out. The water of this legendry river is considered sacred and devotees like to bathe in it before proceeding further. There are a couple of Ghats built for this purpose.

Charan Paduka: About 1.5 km from Ban Ganga and at an altitude of 3380 feet is Charan Paduka where the Mata's footprints are imprinted on a rock slab. One pays obeisance at the footprints of Mata engraved on a rock slab and proceeds further.

When during her meditation she realized that Bhairon Nath had approached the cave in Her search, She created an exit at the other end with Her trident and proceeded towards the Holy Cave. The exact spot where she is believed to have meditated is located at the right hand side inside the cave and is shaped like a womb. The darshan of Adkuwari is considered as one of the most important darshans  after the darshan of the Mata. It is generally believed that by merely passing through this cave, a devotee's sins are cleansed and his soul becomes pious again.

The temple also  has a Havan Kund  whose ashes are considered sacred and its is said that mere application or merely keeping them in the house along with a daily Poojan of Bhairon Baba will protects the residents and  small children. The shrine is located 2.5 km from the Bhawan and involves a steep climb. The return path from the shrine joins the main path a Sanji Chhat.
