Kedarnath - Shiva's Holy Abode in the Himalayas

Kedarnath has many legends attached to it. According to a popular legend, the Pandavas after winning the battle over the Kauravas in the battle of Kurukshetra, felt guilty of having killed their own brothers and sought the blessings of Lord Shiva for redemption. Lord Shiva eluded them repeatedly and while fleeing took refuge at Kedarnath in the form of a bull. On being followed by the Pandavas even there, he dived into the ground, leaving his hump on the surface. The remaining portions of Lord Shiva appeared at four other places, which today are worshipped as his manifestations. The arms appeared at Tungnath, the face at Rudranath, the belly at Madmaheshwar and his locks (hair) at Jata Kalpeswara. Together, these five places are known as Panch Kedar.
Kedarnath Temple, Uttarakhand
There are a number of other legends, and the one has it that Nara and Narayana - two incarnations of Vishnu practised severe penance at Badrikashramam, in front of a Shivalingam fashioned out of earth. When Shiva appeared in front of them, they requested him to take up a permanent abode as a Jyotirlingam at Kedarnath.
