Chardham Yatra: Rameswaram, Dwarka, Puri & Badrinath

According to the legend the four holy shrines of Rameswaram, Dwarka, Puri and Badrinath - collectively known as the Chardham of India are the most sacred of all pilgrimages. It is believed that undertaking a journey to these holy shrines located in the four corners of India washes away one's sins and relieves one from the cycle of birth and death.
Char Dham Yatra of India
These four holy shrines are dedicated to the Hindu trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh. Brahma is the God of Creation, Vishnu the preserver of creation and Mahesh (Shiva) is the God of destruction. The trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh represent the three fundamental powers of nature which are manifest in the world viz. creation, destruction and maintenance.

Dwarka
Puri
Badrinath

The origin of the most important pilgrimage circuit in India - Char Dham Yatra - that covers four holiest destinations in the four corners of the country is not very clear. The only historic connect, popularly known to these four sites-Rameswaram, Dwarka, Puri and Badrinath - is associated with Adi Shankaracharya, who is credited to have club these four shrines located in the North, East, West and South of the country.

Rameswaram is located in Tamil Nadu and is one of the 12 Jyotirlingams of Shiva. It is the place where Rama after his conquest over Lanka worshipped Shiva. Dwarka is associated with Lord Krishna, who came here from Mathura after killing his uncle Kansa. Dwarka is also known as a place where Lord Vishnu killed the demon Shankhasura. The Puri Dham in Orissa is dedicated to Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra. Badrinath in Uttarakhand is the abode of Lord Vishnu. The Badrinath Temple is located on the banks of the Alaknanda.
