Amarnath Yatra: A Pilgrimage to holy Amarnath

Legend has it that on a Shravan day, Lord Shiva, often requested by his wife the goddess Parvati on the reason of his being immortal, narrated the Amar Katha - the immortal tale of the secrets of the cosmos to her.
The Holy Cave of Amarnath

As per legend, Shiva wanted a lonely place where no living being could listen to the immortal secret and ultimately chose Amarnath Cave. During his journey to the cave, he left Nandi (his Bull) at Pahalgam (Bail gaon). Then at Chandanwari, he released the Moon (Chand) from his hair (jataon). At the banks of Lake Sheshnag, he released his snake. He also decided to leave his son Ganesh behind at Mahagunas Parvat (Mahaganesh Hill). Shiva finally left behind the Five Elements - Earth, Sky, Air, Water and Fire, over whom he was lord and who gave birth to life - at Panchtarni.

To further ensure that no living being was able to hear the Amar Katha - the Immortal Tale, he created Kalagni and ordered him to eliminate every living thing in and around the Holy Cave by his fire.

But as fate would have it, there remained shielded in the folds of his deer-skin shawl the egg of a pigeon. And while Parvati fell asleep during Shiva's narration on the Amar Katha, two baby pigeons inside the egg heard Lord Shiva's story and attained immortality. Since then the holy place came to be known as Amarnath, and every year on the full moon day of Shravan, a pair of pigeons is reputedly seen inside the cave.

The Amarnath Yatra, is probably one of the most sacred and popular pilgrimages in India. It is said that this holy journey to the snow-clad cave shrine of Amarnath (Lord Shiva) in scenic Jammu & Kashmir, is not just one of faith and belief, but one of joy! Joy for the senses, as the Amarnath Yatra route winds through some of the most beautiful landscapes in the country; deep spiritual happiness, that the journey itself brings and the rich experience, of the incredibly varied company, of our fellow countrymen.

Swami Vivekananda recounting his Amarnath experience said, "I have never been to anything so beautiful, so inspiring, so cleansing."

Amarnath Shiva Lingam

Darshan at the Holy Cave is generally open from early July (Ashad Purnima) to early August (Sharvan Purnima). In the Amarnath Cave, water falling drop-by-drop from the cave roof, sets to form a white ice-mound that grows in height to take the familiar shape of a Shiva Lingam (the phallus symbol representing Lord Shiva). It is said that this ice-lingam of Amarnath, changes size with the seasons as also with the phases of the moon, becoming the upto 6 ft high on the full moon. The Amarnath cave is about 150 feet high and 90 feet long. Within the cave there are four or five ice formations that resemble the figures of different gods. The biggest figure is regarded as Shiva (Amarnath). By its side are, fascinatingly, two more ice-lingams, that of Parvati (on right), and of their son, Ganesh (on left). It is believed that water from the Ramkund Lake situated above the cave, falls drop by drop to form this holy Shiva Lingam.

The story behind the discovery of the Amarnath Cave
Legends say that, there was once a Gujjar (shepherd) named Buta Malik who was given a sack of coal by a Sadhu. Upon reaching home he discovered that the sack, now magically, contained gold. An overjoyed, Buta Malik rushed back to thank the saint. But the Sadhu was not there. At the spot of their meeting instead, he discovered the holy Cave and the ice Shiv Lingam. He announced his stunning discovery to the Villagers. Eventually, this became a sacred place of Pilgrimage for all believers.

Till date, a percentage of the donations made by pilgrims are given to the descendants of Malik, and the remaining to the board which manages the shrine.

The Amarnath Yatra Routes

There are now 2 routes of the Amarnath Yatra. The traditional and more popular route starts at Pahalgam about 96 km from Srinagar and the second route of the Amarnath Yatra begins at Baltal which is ahead of Sonamarg some 115 km from Srinagar.

1. The Amarnath Yatra Route from Pahalgam
Situated in a narrow gorge at the farther end of Lidder Valley, the Amarnath Shrine stands at 3,888 m and is 46 km from Pahalgam. Though the original pilgrimages suggest that the Yatra be undertaken from Srinagar, the more common practice is to begin the Amarnath Yatra at Pahalgam or Chandanwari, and cover the distance to Amarnath shrine and back, in 5 days.

The Yatra route from Pahalgam is
Pahalgam - 16km - Chandanwari - 3km - Pissu Top - 9km - Sheshnag - 4.6km - Mahagunas (pass) - 6km - Panchtarini - 3km - Sangam - 3km - Amarnath Cave

Amarnath Yatra Routes

PAHALGAM
Pahalgam is 96 km from Srinagar. This distance can be covered by car, bus or taxi. Surrounded by mountains, Pahalgam (also known as the 'Valley of Shepherds') is an enchanting small town on the banks of the Lidder River (...more on Pahalgam). All essentials are available here. There is also a choice of accommodation in a range of private hotels or in camps run by the Govt. and NGO's. Read more on Pahalgam

Pilgrims on Amarnath Yatra

CHANDANWARI
Chandanwari (2896 m) is a small shut off valley, at the junction of Sheshnag stream and the stream for Astanmarg. The distance from Pahalgam to Chandanwari is 16 km. The route is good and can be covered either on foot or by road transport, as Mini buses are also available from Pahalgam to reach Chandanwari. The road runs along the Lidder River and is very scenic. Food is easily available at the many shops along the route and also at free langars.
Pilgrims camp at Pahalgam or Chandanwari on the first night.

PISSU TOP
From Chandanwari one usually treks straight on to Sheshnag Lake via Pissu Top. It is a steep climb till Pissu Top (3 km) after which the climb is relatively gradual till Sheshnag. The views on the route are said to be the most beautiful.

Sheshnag Lake, Amarnath Yatra

SHESHNAG
Sheshnag is one of the windiest places in this valley. The Sheshnag Mountain, takes its name from its Seven Peaks, resembling the heads of the mythical Sheshnag snake. The second night's camp at Sheshnag overlooks the deep blue waters of Sheshnag Lake, and glaciers beyond. A bath in the Sheshnag Lake, a beep breath of the pine-scented air, a look around at the breath-taking beauty of the surroundings, a hot meal at one of the many camps and you are at peace and the tiredness of the journey just vanishes.

PANCHTARNI
From Sheshnag, it is a steep climb of 4.6 km to cross the Mahagunas Pass (4276m). The route then descends to the meadow lands of Panchtarini at a height of (3657 m). The route to Mahagunas (pass) is very scenic and full of rivulets, water falls and springs. At Panchtarni, at the foot of Bhairav mount, five Rivers which apparently originated from Lord Shiva's Hair flow together. ('Panch' = 'five' and 'Tarini' = 'river') Panchtarini is the popular camp before the last leg of the Amarnath Yatra via Sangam and finally to the Amarnath cave shrine.

Pilgrims near Amarnath Cave

THE AMARNATH CAVE SHRINE
The Amarnath cave-shrine is just 6 km away from Panchtarni. Just about half-way, one comes to Sangam - that of the Amravati and Panchtarni rivers. (Many pilgrims take a bath here and apply a curious white soil found here and locally called Bhasam - naturally, with reference to the white ash that Shiva loved to coat his body with) .
From Sangam, it's about 3 km to the Amarnath Cave shrine. Inside the calm and tranquil of the Amarnath cave shrine one finally glimpses the massive white ice-lingam revered as Amarnath (Lord Shiva). There are also two smaller lingams denoting his consort Parvati and their son Ganesh nearby.

As there is no place to stay at the Amarnath Shrine, pilgrims start in the early morning from Pachtarini, and mostly reach back by evening.

2. The Amarnath Yatra Route from Baltal
Another shorter route for the Amarnath Yatra has recently been opened starting at Baltal, which is ahead of Sonamarg. From Baltal the Amarnath shrine is only 14 km away.

The Amarnath Yatra route from Baltal is
Srinagar - 110km - Sonmarg - 15km - Baltal - 2km - Domail - 5km - Barari - 4km - Sangam - 3km - Amarnath Cave

Though the Baltal route is far shorter than the Chandanwari-Amarnath cave route, it is also steeper, narrower and more difficult. You can go trek on foot, or hire a pony or a Palki. This route joins the Chandanwari route at Sangam.

The Baltal route is actually more popular mostly for its helicopter service, which in about 7 minutes can drop you at the Holy Cave! (The return journey would take another 7 minutes from the Amarnath cave to Baltal by Helicopter)

Baltal has a range of tented accommodations run by private operators. The shrine board offers prefabricated huts with attached baths with running water facilities.

Places to stay on Amarnath Yatra
Tented accommodation is available along the way at the night halts and has to be secured on the yatri's own initiative (Rs 50-100 per night). Click here for more on places to stay along the Amarnath Yatra route
