#1 Hotel Review of Sultanahmet Suites, Istanbul Posted on: Dec 11, 2007

Location: This apart hotel is NOT located in Sultanahmet but in a working class neighbourhood about 20 minute-walk from the tourist center down a steep hill. It is too far from everywhere, and not very tourist friendly. The building and its vicinity gets pitch dark at night, so it could be risky and dangerous to stay here. It fails to offer sense of security. The property does not hire any staff. There is nobody staying in the building during the night.

Hotel/Room Condition: Room is large and relatively clean. (cont.) Later I wrote about this and sent it to a travel site. Immediately after the review was posted, my phone rang. It was 1 a.m., midnight. I answered the phone and heard a loud voice shouting at me. It was the owner of Sultanahmet Suites. I immediately hang up, but he called over and over, and finally left the following threat on my answering machine. "I tell you something. I will go to your embassy. I have all the copies of your e-mails and everything. You only have 48 hours to clean up what you have written about me to tripadvisor. So you either do that, or I will be a trouble for you." (tape-recorded) When I ignored his threat, his wife sent me a threatening e-mail. Then they called my boyfriend at work and threatened him. They said they would sell Sultanahmet Suites and use that money to sue him (who is totally unrelated to this problem) and me! We did not give into their threats and harassments. (cont.)

Food & Beverages: N/A (No restaurant or cafe) (cont.) Then the owner and his wife posted our privacy information on tripadvisor Istanbul forum. Here is how the forum participants reacted: "(The Sultanahmetsuites owners) talked about the private lives (of guests) in a strangely defamatory manner (in a public forum). This is a very serious invasion of privacy by a Hotel Manager into the private lives of hotel''s guests. Ladies and Gentlemen, It seems that if you want your private lives be exposed in public forums, you should stay at Sultanahmet Suites a couple of days. This is a very sad affair. " "To violate the privacy of guests is the last straw for any hotel managers, and I certainly will not mention this property to prospective visitors nor will I speak positively of it in the future." "The owners of Sultanahmet Suites do not have the capacity, skills, training, and especially goodwill to run an establishment be it in Sultanahmet or anywhere else." (cont.)

Facilities: Mediocre. No lift. No bath tub. No telephone in the room. Wifi was broken. (cont.)Another problem is the owners tout sultanahmetsuites using different names on different sites (e.g. “josephine009" and other pseudonyms on tripadvisor, ”"gelincik" on Fodor''s, “aylinjoy” on Frommers, etc.). They also ask former guests to write rave reviews for them on Tripadvisor. After being pressed hard by TA Istanbul forum participants, the wife admitted; "My guest are writing to my personel e-mail they say thank you and last two mounths I wanted from them if they writes to TA it will be helpfull and they did." This is why there are so many glowing (but solicited) reviews. Sultanahmet Suites has only 4 rooms, but 11 raving reviews appeared in just 2 months - from October to November 2007. How come a hotel that has ONLY 4 ROOMS gets so many reviews (all so raving), when 30-40 room hotels in Sultanahmet area have just a few reviews spread over many years? (cont.)

Hotel Service: (cont.) And, what''s funny is that 2 reviews were posted on Nov. 18 by 2 "different" "guests", called "JOSEPH13" and "Anastasia_NYC", both from New York, but the 2 reviews are exactly the same! :) Again, NO HOTEL MANAGER should ever yell, insult, abuse and horrify a guest, and call a former guest in her home country and threaten her. NO HOTEL MANAGER should retaliate to a negative review by exposing customers'' privacy on the internet. This is a true misconduct and is totally against all ethics of hotel management. Also, it is unethical to post coerced reviews and self-touts, becuase it will mislead tourists and will get them screwed. (I am one of them - misled by TA reviews and got screwed). Everyone, please avoid this dreadful place. Don''t get yourself into trouble. For details, please read tripadvisor Istanbul forum, Don''t stay at Sultanahmet Suites and Busy-Retired - Sultanahment Suites.

Value for Money: Low. Basically no service is provided at this property. Just a room. No warm atmposhere.
