Kozhikode is also known as Calicut. In fact the name Calicut is derived from Calico, which is a hand woven cloth that has its origins here. Also, Kozhikode is the city where Vasco da Gama landed on a remote beach – Kappad – way back in 1498. Kozhikode is believed to have been discovered by Arab prince, Kozhikode.
Kozhikode served as the capital of Malabar during the reigns of Zamorins, who ruled the region before the coming of the British. The region was trading in spices like black pepper and cardamom with the outside world. Kozhikode is situated about 410 km north of state capital Thiruvananthapuram. It is the third largest city in Kerala and the headquarters of Kozhikode district.
