Shirdi, a pilgrimage site in Ahmadnagar district of Maharashtra, is
alive with faith and religious fervor. It is believed to have been the
home of a popular saint, Shirdi Sai Baba. Baba is said to have visited
the town (then a village) when he was around sixteen years old and
stayed there till he was eighty.
It is believed that people of
different faiths would come to hear Baba’s discourses on love,
patience, compassion and religious tolerance as well as to witness the
miracles. Shirdi is among the most popular religious destination in the
country. It is visited by hundreds of devotees every year, who come to
pay respects to Sai Baba from different parts of the country.
The
ambience is set with a palki procession being taken through the streets
of Shirdi every Thursday. A photo of Sai Baba, his slippers and stick
are placed in the palki and carried on the shoulders by the priests.
