Nestled high in the Himalayan ranges, Gulmarg is one of those inch-perfect idyllic hill stations often sighted in exclusive travel brochures. The breathtaking beauty of the unadulterated snow-covered landscape, the lushness of the exquisite valleys and traditional Kashmiri hospitality combine to make Gulmarg a must-see on any itinerary to the Jammu and Kashmir region. No wonder it is being touted as a possible host for the 2010 Commonwealth winter games.
Gulmarg, which literally means ‘meadow of flowers’ lies 52 km to the west of Srinagar. It provides an endless list of attractions for any tourist – the famous Gondola cable cars, great skiing conditions, beautiful sightseeing spots and even a golf course!
Historically, Gulmarg was a favourite summer destination for the Mughals and subsequently, the British. The hill has continuous army presence due to its proximity to the line of control. The closest major town is Srinagar which can be accessed by road.
Gulmarg has numerous hotels catering to different types of tourists. The off season charges range from Rs. 500 to around Rs. 6500. There are no permanent residents and all people living in Gulmarg are either hotel employees or guests.
