India is home to what is believed to be self-manifested shrines of Lord Vishnu. One of the foremost shrines among these is the temple of lord Ranganathar found in the center of Srirangam, an island on the beautiful, peaceful banks of the river Cauvery. This temple is also believed to be among the 108 main Vishnu temples in India – also known as “Divyadesams”. The temple is known by numerous names including Periyakoil, Vaikundam, Bhogamandabam, Bhoologa and so on.
This temple is the centre of lives of the people in Srirangam and is a perfect example of the marvelous architecture found in India. The entire temple premises extends across 156 acres of land and the temple encloses seven different enclosures – known in Sanskrit as the “prakaras”. It has twenty-one towers within and is enclosed by thick stone walls that are typical of many famous temples in the south of this country. The main tower known as the “Rajagopuram” is over 70 meters in height with thirteen levels, making it the tallest temple in Asia.
A number of hotels can be found around Srirangam. Hotel Balaji Bhavan (contactable at 0431 2431023) and hotel Sangam (contactable at 0431 2414700) are some of the modest hotels that can be found in close proximity to the temple.
