Bhimtal at an altitude of 1200 meters is one of the largest lakes around Nainital named after Bhima, the second Pandava brother in the epic Mahabharata.
The lake has an island in the center, can be approached only by a boat and it also has a popular restaurant on it.
Bhimtal is at a distance of 295 km from Delhi and only 25 km from Nainital. Boating is a popular activity that one can indlulde in here. There is also a 17th century temple complex - Bhimeshwar, dedicated to Bhim here alongside a 40 ft high dam at one end of the lake. Another interesting place in Bhimtal is The Museum of Folk Culture (Lok Sanskriti Sangrahalaya) housing collections of folk paintings and ancient wooden artifacts.
