Chitradurga is a historic town known for its fort over a hill. Associated with it are many legends and stories of bravery of the local chieftains who ruled the region. Particularly well known is the story of Obavva, a courageous lady and wife of one of the guards of the fort. It is said that she single handedly killed hundreds of soldiers of Hyder Ali when they tried to sneak in to the fort. The tunnel entrance is still shown to people who visit the fort.
The terrain here is rugged. Barren hills dot the landscape, with windmills lining the ridges. Sunflowers carpet the land yellow in July-August, making the whole region colorful. Tanks and large reservoirs dot this treeless landscape. But it is the fort that dominates the attractions in the area.+ more about Chitradurga
