Today, Jhansi is famous more for Rani Laxmi Bai than for any other reason. Yet this fact obscures the town’s historical importance as the gateway to the region of Bundelkhand. “Bundelen harbolon ke munh hamni suni kahani thi…”, yet people forget.
Many people will be surprised to know that the town of Jhansi dates from the time when Khajuraho was a flourishing city. In the 9th century, the Rajput Chandelas, the same dynasty that built the famous temples at Khajuraho, ruled the city. It was in the 14th century that the Bundela dynasty trained their eyes on the city. Since their capital remained at Orccha, the city remained of minor importance.
