The first name that comes to mind when we hear Porbandar is Mahatma Gandhi – the father of nation. Porbandar is the birth place of Mahatma Gandhi, who was born here as Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi in the home of dewan of Porbandar in 1869. Porbandar is also associated with Sudama, a very dear friend of lord Krishna.
The word ‘Porbandar’ comes from ‘Porai’ and ‘Bandar’. The word ‘Porai’ is the name of a local goddess and ‘Bandar’ means port or harbour, thus Porbandar means Porai’s harbour. Porbandar is situated in the West of India in the state of Gujarat. The region in the ancient times was referred to ‘Pauravelakul’.
