Lonavala lies in the western state of Maharashtra in India. It is about 64 km away from the city of Pune and 96 km away from the city Mumbai. It is famous throughout India for the hard candy sweet known as Chikki and is also a major stop on the rail line connecting Mumbai and Pune. It is also an important town on the Mumbai-Pune road link. Both the Mumbai-Pune Expressway as well as the Mumbai-Pune highway pass through Lonavala.
It was the then the Governor of Bombay who discovered the historic city of Lonavala in 1811. The city that we know today as Lonavala was a thick forested area populated by few hundred tribals who had become accustomed to living in it. It is said that the place was called Lonali, because of the thick forest; however there is no historic evidence to support it. One learns on further investigation that Lonavala derived its name from an amalgamation of the word Layan, which means a resting place in Sanskrit, and Avali, which means a series in Prakrit. Lonavala was derived by bringing the two words together
Lonvala has been ruled by a diverse set of rulers starting from the Yadav Kings, to Moghuls and later on the Marathas under the Peshwa dynasty. The British started ruling this region from 1818 and it was returned to the Indian Union after independence.
