The town of Bijapur, once called Vijayapura has a history of nearly a thousand years. Established by Kalyani Chalukya Kings, Bijapur has changed hands many times. It was governed by Vijayanagar Empire, Adil Shahi Dynasty, Marathas and then the British. Even in the post independent India, it was first part of the state of Bombay and later shifter to Mysore, now called Karnataka.
The city contains three major sections – a citadel, a fort, and the remains of the times of the Sultanate. It also has a few remains of Hindu Temples, which belong to the pre-islamic period. But the prime attractions belong to the era of Adil Shahi Sultans.

Bijpaur probably has the finest Islamic architecture in South India outside Andhra Pradesh.
Bijapur is located in the plains of North Karnataka, nearly 400km from Hyderabad, and 540km from Bangalore. Though Bijapur has much to offer to the tourists, amenities are limited and has only a handful of mid-range accommodation. Weather is pleasant in winters, and is the ideal season to visit. Summers can be hot.
