Bhandardara is at an altitude of 750 meters above sea level. It is located on the banks of the Pravara River. According to the legend, Agasti Rishi meditated here for a year without a morsel of food, surviving only on water and air. Pleased with his devotion, god came down to the earth and blessed Agasti Rishi with a stream of the Ganga river, which is now known as the Pravara River.
An easygoing town, it is a great place for both active and not so active travellers. If your idea of a holiday is to relax and have good time, you can simply walk around and take in the lovely views of verdant surroundings. Those with itchy feet can find solace in trekking and other outdoor things that one can do here. From Bhandardara one can trek to the famous Ratangad and Harishchandragad forts. A little ahead are the famous Ajoba, or ‘grandfather’ peak, and Ghanchakkar. One can also climb up to the Kalsubai peak (5,400 ft), the highest peak in Maharashtra. The peak once served as a watchtower during the times of the Marathas.
