Most people identify Lamayuru with its well known monastery – the Yung Drung Gompa. But there is more to this tiny village stuck between steep mountains - the fascinating yellow, wrinkled slopes formed by the lake that once stood where Lamayuru is something to look forward to on a visit here.
Legend has it that Bodhisattva identified this place as holy at a time when the area was surrounded by a clear lake full of serpants, and foretold about the draining of the lake and creation of a monastery. The monastery that stands today has a history of nearly thousand years when it was institutionalized by Buddhist scholar Naropa. It belongs to the Kagyupa or red-hat order of the Tibetan Buddhism.
