Amaravati, an ancient city, is situated on the banks of river Krishna in the state of Andhra Pradesh in India. This place is famous for the temple of Lord Siva

The Amareshwara Temple
In this place we can find the different and elevated forms of Lord Shiva who is believed to exist in five different forms of lingams called as ‘Pranaveswara’, ‘Agasteswara’, ‘Kosaleswara’, ‘Pomeswara’ and ‘Parthiveswara’. Lord Shiva, in the form of a 15 feet high white marble Shiva lingam, is the presiding deity worshipped in this temple along with other deities. Also, Lord Amareshwara and his spouse Bala Chamundika are worshipped here.

There are different myths related to this temple which is situated on the holy River Krishna. According to one of the legend, even a flood in the river Krishna would turn its flow to some other side, without affecting the temple. The diversion of the River Krishna from north to south can be clearly spotted from this place. Another tale has it that, their existed a Buddhist shrine in the place where the temple stands today. This was a matter of controversy earlier as the foundations of the temple were laid in typical Buddhist style.

The architecture of the temple is worth appreciating as there are four high gopura (temple tower) built in Dravidian style, surrounding the temple. Even the ‘Vimana’ (tower of the sanctum sanctorum) of this temple is built in the same style of architecture. There is a white marble Lotus Medallion above the cylindrical ‘Mula Virat’ (main idol) in the Garbha griha of the temple. This cylindrical Mula Virat and the intricately decorated lotus Medallion are built in typical Buddhist style. There is also a Buddha Stupa which is famous all over the world.

The town goes vibrating and more spiritual during ‘Maha Shivaratri’, Navaratri and Kalyana Utsavas. Be prepared to witness heavy rush during Maha Shivaratri which falls in the month of February/March.
