The city of Visakhapatnam, or Vizag as it is more popularly known, is located in the state of Andhra Pradesh. Traditionally, the city has been famous for its seaport. Built by the British in early 20^th century, the port is located in one of the very few natural harbours on the East Coast of India. These days, Visakhapatnam is visited for its unspoilt beaches and the city has been nick-named the Goa of the East Coast. It is also the second-largest city in Andhra Pradesh and a major industrial and IT hub in the country. The industrial reputation of the city looms large and it is only recently that the city is being sought out by tourists. This is largely due to the Andhra Tourist Council’s efforts to showcase the natural beauty of the city and its surrounding areas. The city has gained the nickname of the Jewel of the Coramandel Coast – a fact supported by its verdant red laterite hills and virgin beaches. The city is also a major gateway to places of natural beauty like Araku Valley and the Borra Caves.
