Many people will be surprised to realize how old the city of Coimbatore actually is. Till the 9^th century, it was a part of the mighty Chola empire. The 1500s saw the rise of the Delhi Sultanate and Coimbatore passed in to the hands of the Muslim rulers. Soon after, power changed hands and Coimbatore was annexed by the Vijayanagara kingdom. With the coming of the modern era, the city became the bone of contention between the armies of Tipu Sultan and the East India Company.

The city today retains its rustic charm. While its past has been quite eventful, the first time visitor might not notice the effect time has wrought within the city. Coimbatore reveals these nuggets only to the discerning traveler.

At the time of the British Rule, the city was transformed into a vast clothes manufacturing center. It was nick-named the Manchester of the East. This was a far cry from the medieval rusticity which the ‘village’ of Coimbatore had always been known for.      

Modern Coimbatore prides itself on being India’s garment manufacturing hub. However, it is only when you reach Coimbatore that you realize that it has the beautiful warmth of a hill station.
