A UNESCO World Heritage site, the Ajanta and Ellora caves are an architectural and artistic marvel. Work was begun on these caves in AD 400 when Buddhist monks started carving out these temples and prayer halls from the cliffs located within the Sahyadri Hills. The paintings and frescoes depict the story of the development of Buddhism – a tale spanning BC 200 to AD 650. Work was first begun on the Ajanta complex when Buddhist monks started carving out the rock cliffs to fashion a series of 29 caves.
