Aurangabad is the base to explore the World Heritage Sites of Ajanta and Ellora. The city was named after Aurangzeb, the last of the great Mughal Emperors. Aurangabad is a city of tombs and Darwazas (Gates). It is home to a large number of monuments. Aurangabad is strategically located at the cross roads of north and south India, and no wonder Mohammed-bin-Tughlak and Aurangzeb, two powerful kings attempted to trans-locate their capital from Delhi to Aurangabad. From Aurangabad, they thought, they would be better able to control both northern and southern regions of their empires.
