The only reason for visiting Bharatpur is to watch birds in the famous Keoladeo Ghana National Park. Other than the park, there is the Lohagarh fort and museum, and a Ganga temple worth mentioning. Bharatpur had been the capital of a small princely state. If you stay there for more than a night and have visited the park at least twice during your stay and therefore want to explore the town, then these are the  places which can be visited. But these are not must include in your it itinerary.

Sightseeing at Bharatpur:

  • Keoladeo Ghana National Park:  A UNESCO World Heritage site, this erstwhile royal duck hunting ground of the Bharatpur rulers is today home to over 400 species of water birds.  One of the finest bird sanctuaries in Asia, exotic migratory birds from Afghanistan, Central Asia, Tibet as well as Siberian cranes from the Arctic, greyleg geese from Siberia and the bareheaded geese from China along with a large number of cormorants, spoonbills, storks, egrets, herons, pelicans, Ebis and grey herons make this park their home during the winters.
Guides, who have been trained by Forest Department, can be hired at Rs 75 per hour or you can purchase field guides sold at the Tourist Reception Centre at the gate.
  •  Lohagarh Fort: As the name suggest, this impregnable fort was constructed of iron by Maharaja Suraj Mal to withstand the onslaughts of the British in the 18th century. The fort stood true to its name four times before finally falling to Lord Lake in 1804. The fort surrounded by a moat consists of three palaces within its premises- the Kishori Mahal, Mahal Khas and Kothi Khas and two towers the Jawahar Burj and Fateh Burj which were erected to commemorate the victory over the Mughals and the British. The Ashtadhatu (eight-metal) gateway has paintings of huge elephants
  •  Government Museum:  An amalgamation of Mughal and Rajput architecture, the Government Museum with its patterned floor tiles and intricate designs is located within the Lohagarh fort and hosts a rich collection of exquisitely carved sculptures, ancient inscriptions dating and other antiquities dating way back as 2nd century. Timings: 10 am -4 am (Fridays closed)
  •  The Bharatpur Palace: A royal amalgam of Mughal and Rajput architectural styles, the Bharatpur Palace has some magnificent apartments and some intricately designed floor tiles that heighten the beauty of this glorious edifice. The central part of the Palace houses a museum, which had some very ancient exhibits at display.
It is a fine fusion of Mughal and Rajput architecture and was built in various phases by different maharajas. The magnificent apartments are richly decorated with patterned floor tiles having exquisite and intricate designs. The museum occupies the main central wing displaying collections dating back to the 2nd century which demonstrates the art and skill of the region.
  •  Ganga Mandir: Built by Maharaja Balwant Singh in 1845 from a month’s donation of all persons employed in the state service, the Ganga Mandir is on of the finest temple in the region.
  •  Laxman Mandir: Dedicated to Laxman, the brother of lord Rama, whose name is also engraved on the state arms and the seals, the Laxman Mandir is renowned for its beautiful stone work and elaborates carvings on doorways, ceilings, pillars, walls and arches.
