Ever dreamed of leaving the world behind? Lansdowne just might be the place for you. A tiny town up in the hills of Uttaranchal (and a 5 hours drive from New Delhi), Lansdowne is surrounded by green, lush hills. The term ‘unspoilt’ is used these days quite liberally (and for all sorts of places) but Lansdowne truly is.
As a friend once aptly said, Lansdowne is the kind of place where you put a chair in your balcony, get a cup of tea, settle yourself comfortably and while away the time looking at the hills. It is the ultimate weekend getaway. You can recharge your batteries here, safe from the tourist hordes and souvenir shops. In fact, its citizens are proud of the fact that the town does not even have a cinema hall.

Lansdowne has been a bastion of the Garhwal Rifles for a while now. It is the Cantt. Board which takes immense satisfaction in maintaining the pristine state of the Uttaranchal town. If you can wrangle an invitation, take a walk through the Cantt. Area. The Raj-era guesthouse and Regimental Mess are full of tales of ghostly visitors.
If you can rouse yourself to some activity, consider taking a walk to St. John’s Church. Boating can be enjoyed at the Bhulla Tal while the religious minded can make a trip to the ancient Tarkeshwar Mahadev temple.
There aren’t too many hotels in town. The GMVN Tourist Bungalow is your best bet. Most restaurants are located in the main bazaar and surprisingly, there are quite a few options available. Take your pick from steamy momos, alu parathas or delicious dosas.

I have been to lansdowne twice, its a lovely quite place away from madding crowd especially punju's. Good to spend couple of quiet days . Driving is the only option to reach lansdowne, not very far from delhi. One can reach lansdowne from delhi in flat 5-6hrs via meerut-bijnor-najibabad-kotdwar-lansdowne. Remember their is only one decent place to eat & relax on this entire journey & that is HOTEL PALM GREEN just before you enter bijnor & exactly midway between delhi & lansdowne. Nice clean place, well maintained, great food & homely ambience. Do not miss THIS.
