Interesting Monuments

The Fort

Belgaum has a fort within which there are several historical and religious monuments. Strengthened by the Adil Shahi dynasty, the fort has fine ramparts and is surrounded by a wide moat. Though on a first appearance the fort appears fairly well preserved, the signs of neglect and damage due to the elements of nature are showing up in several places. The fort stands as a silent witness of grandeur of the kings and the neglect at the hands of modern rulers. The ramparts of the fort lead to several bastions and one can easily walk all around the fort and experience the history.

Religious shrines

Inside the fort are located several interesting monuments, these include temples, basadis and mosques. At the entrance of the fort are two temples dedicated to Ganapati and Durga. There are two basadis (Jain temples) in later Chalukyan style, one of them – Kamala Basadi – built in 1204 by one Bichana or Bichiraja, a minister of Kartavirya IV of the Ratta dynasty is a beautiful work of art. The basti exhibits the execution of a totally refined style of temple architecture.

Belgaum has some important mosques and churches also. While the Safa Masjid and Jami Masjid (both inside the fort) are the oldest mosques, the St. Mary's Church in the camp area, built in 1869 is perhaps the most majestic church in the region. Designed and executed by Rev. Francis Gell, this imposing stone church has fine piers in the prayer hall and gorgeous stained glasses at its doors and windows. In front of the west porch almost at the meeting of the four chief Cantonment roads, stands a lofty memorial cross raised in memory of the 64th Regiment soldiers who fell in the 1857 mutiny.

Other interesting monuments in the town include the Military headquarters and their campuses, the secretariat and several old-style buildings strewn around the town.
