Amazing though it may sound, the 'Tiger' found all over India is the Bengal Tiger! Voted 'favourite wild animal' the world over, the savage beauty of the tiger remains a symbol of the Indian wilderness, and continues to inspire. Tiger pugmarks, being unique, are used for census. Sighting the tiger (Panthera tigris tigris), in India is best in peak summers when they cool themselves in water and mud.

The inspiration behind Rudyard Kipling's unforgettable classic Jungle Book, Kanha National Park has been a magnet for wildlife enthusiasts. One of the finest national parks in India that promises a high chance of tiger sighting, Kanha is located in Mandla district of Madhya Pradesh. 'Sher Khan' as the big beast is called in the Jungle Book is what leads many to this park. As soon as you hit the tiger trail in an open jeep safari armed with a pair of binoculars and your eyes are constantly on the look out for that elusive creature, even a slight movement behind the bushes alerts you. Such is the appeal and curiosity of watching a tiger. Kanha, if you are 'lucky' doesn't disappoint.

Kanha National Park

Came into being in 1955, the Kanha National Park located in the central state of Madhya Pradesh forms the core of the Kanha Tiger Reserve, which was created in 1974 under Project Tiger. One of the major contribution of the park was its landmark achievement in the preservation of the rare hard-ground Swamp Deer (Barasingha), saving it from near extinction. Excellent conservation programs for the overall protection of the Park's fauna and flora, makes Kanha one of the most well maintained National Parks in the country.

Park Entry Fee

Indians Rs. 25, foreigners Rs. 500 (covers both morning and afternoon safaris)
Cameras Still Rs 40
Video
Rs 300
(valid for the entire day)
Guide charge per vehicle Rs. 100 per entrance

Kanha National Park is spread over an area of over 1,940-sq-kms. The highlight of this region's topography is the horseshoe shape valley and the park area that is surrounded by the spurs of the Mekal. The park features grasslands that cover the extensive plateau. The Surpan River meanders through the park. popular attraction within the Park is Bamni Dadar, also known as Sunset Point that offers the breathtaking backdrop of the sunset against grazing gaurs and sambhars that adds to the natural splendour of the area. Apart from its diverse wildlife and bird population, the frequent sightings of tigers roaming in the wild at Kanha Tiger Reserve remain the most popular draw.

The two main entry points to the Kanha National Park are Khatia (3 km from Kisli) and Mukki. From Jabalpur, Kisli is 165 km via Chiraidongri, and Mukki is 203 km via Motinala and Garhi. For wildlife enthusiasts from Bilaspur (182 km), Raipur (213 km) and Balaghat (83 km), Mukki on State Highway No. 26 is the convenient entry point. Travellers from Nagpur can enter through Kisli (259 km) via Nainpur and Chiraidongri.

On the Tiger Trail in Kanha National Park
Kanha National Park

Tracking tiger in Kanha can both be exciting and frustrating at the same time. Hours after in an open jeep you may get a good glimpse of other animals but the tiger. Despite of all your efforts – like by following pugmarks, keeping your eyes peeled for signs of dragged kill and listening for alarm calls, the majestic animal just wouldn't oblige. But if the luck is on your side (with an astute guide), who knows you’ll be boasting about your first time tiger encounter experience. Kanha no doubt is a tiger country and the probability of watching one is surely high here if not guaranteed.

Spotting wild animals in any park is always a matter of luck but Kanha is so rich in wildlife that the odds are tilted in your favour. Novice (read 1st time) visitors are often so keen to spot the tiger that they overlook the animals, which only adds to the disappointment. The trick is to keep your eyes and ears open to enjoy the jungle tour.

Kanha National Park

No doubt, tiger is the star attraction at the Kanha National Park, there are other animals, which adds to the wildlife experience. The main wildlife attractions include bison, gaur, sambhar, chital, barasingha, barking deer, black buck, chousingha, nilgai, mouse deer, sloth bear, jackal fox, black deer, porcupine, jungle cat, hyena, python, pea fowl, hare, mongoose, monkey, and leopard.

Tiger may be a sure shot draw for visitors to the park, but if there is an animal that represent Kanha, it is the barasingha, or the swamp deer. The barasinghas at the Kanha National Park are unique, being the hard-ground variety, which can be seen roaming around the large open tracts of grass amidst the forests of teak and bamboo. At one point of time (some 20 years ago), the barasingha was faced with extinction but some desperate measures including the fencing-off of some animals helped save them and again the air in Kanha bugle with their rutting calls.
In winter season, when open meadows teem with barasinghas, you can rest assured that there is a predator on the prowl around the fringes. A tiger, out of nowhere would circle around at least two or three times during the day and the swamp deer would go berserk, their husky alarm calls ringing through the jungle.

Wild Bison at Kanha National Park

Someone rightly said tiger is the nucleus of most of India’s wildlife experience and other experiences — especially those related to birds — often get overlooked. But if you are a keen bird lover don’t miss on birds in the Kanha National Park. There are as many as 300 bird species here, both resident and migratory. The birds species in the park include teals, storks, pond herons, pintails, egrets, peacock, pea fowl, jungle fowl, spur fowl, partridges, quails, spotted parakeets, ring doves, rock pigeons, green pigeons, cuckoos, bee-eater, hoopoes, drongos, warblers, kingfishers, finches, woodpeckers, orioles, owls and fly catchers.
