Prefering the open slopes of the higher Nilgiris, the Nilgiri Tahr (Hemitragus hylocrius) is a stocky & muscular goat-like animal, whose rich grey-brown beauty is complemented by its poetically misty green habitat.
Seeing a herd of Nigiri Thar graze at gravity-defying angles, really drives home the acrobatic sure-footedness that these manificient animals symbolise and bookmarks an unforgettable moment.

A breath-takingly beautiful expanse of 97 sq km of high hills covered with the rolling grasslands and patches of dense shola forest make up the Eravikulam National Park. Situated in the Idukki district in Kerala, it lies on the border of Kerala and Tamil Nadu (where it extends as the Annamalai National Park). The stunning Anamudi (2694 m), the highest peak south of the Himalayas, is situated in this park.

Eravikulam-elephants

The Eravikulam National is home to half the world’s population of the majestic Nilgiri Tahr (also known Nilgiri Ibex) and is the best place to see this rare mountain goat in its natural wild habitat. The park is divided into 3 regions - the core area, the buffer area and the tourism area. Visitors are allowed only to the tourism area which is in the Rajamala region. Trekking facilities are available here to other parts of the park.

With its wildlife-rich grasslands interspersed with dense forest and rocky outcrops often clothed in mist, a trip into the Eravikulam National Park is most rewarding and visually spectacular.
