India and elephants are inseparable; it is a part of our history, myth, culture and in many areas, a way of life! The elephant’s is a matriarchal society - small, organised, largely forest-dwelling, herds.Contrary to belief, the elephant is the most intelligent & dangerous of Indian wildlife, having few natural enemies - its huge magnificience & controlled might a thrill unmatched when seen in the wild.

Watching an elephant in the wild is a moment to treasure for a wildlife enthusiast. A herd of elephants grazing languidly or having fun in the waters is a captivating sight indeed. A close encounter, however with this largest animal on land, sends a shiver down the spine. On a wildlife safari, you may be safe from a tiger in a jeep but your iron horse is no answer to the might of an elephant. One of the finest wildlife parks to get close and personal to this giant animal is Rajaji National Park in Uttarakhand.

Rajaji National Park

Rajaji National Park is spread over an area of 820.42 sq km and is located in the foothills of the Shivalik ranges at the starting point of the vast Indo-Gangetic plains. The location of the park being such that it represents vegetation of several distinct zones; however most of the land is covered in Sal forests. The park is liberally sprinkled with the abundance of nature’s bounty and thus attracts a large number of wildlife conservationists, nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts.

Things to do

Elephant Safari
At the Chilla Gate, there are two elephants to take you on a pleasant safari. The safaris last for 2 hrs and the timings are at 9 am and 3 pm during winter months, and 5.30 am and 5 pm in summer. It is wise to book in advance as there are only two safaris a day. However, if there are enough people, more safaris can be organised.

Jeep safari
Another interesting way to explore the park is through Jeep Safari. Each vehicle entering the park, whether it's private or not, has to be accompanied by a guide.

An important portion of the Haridwar Range Reserve Forest runs contiguously with Chilla’s southern and south-eastern boundaries. While this provides animals some extra space, it has its own set of problems. This particularly causes jurisdiction issues. The park is close to the busy Delhi-Badrinath NH58.

The present Rajaji National Park was formed in 1983 and is amalgamation of three sanctuaries- Rajaji sanctuary (established in 1948) Motichur sanctuary (established in 1964) and Chilla sanctuary (established in 1977). The park is named after renowned statesman and freedom fighter Sri C. Rajgopalachariya - The first and last Governor General of independent India popularly known as ‘Rajaji.’

Chilla lies on the east bank of the Ganga while Rajaji and Motichur are on the west bank of the river. Motichur, though easily accessible from NH58 (that also connects Haridwar & Rishikesh), does not provide many chances of spotting animals as the forests are dense. Tourists, therefore, prefer Chilla, which is also only half an hour from both Haridwar and Rishikesh. To enter the Chilla gate, cross the Ganga and head left for about 5 km (on the east side of the highway) towards Chilla.

The E- Day in Rajaji National Park
Elephants at Rajaji

You need luck and a skilled guide to get good elephant sightings in Rajaji National Park. Sight of an elephant or of a herd is such a delightful wildlife experience. But nothing can beat the sight of a herd frolicking in the waters. You can watch the elephant drama in the waters for hours. The striking thing to note in whatever you see is the mother-child affection. While bathing the matriarchs do exercise their limits of control with a high degree of affection by jostling and twining their trunks. Scenes like a baby elephant playing between an elders' leg, rolling in the mud and spraying themselves in water will remain with you forever. Incredible moments like this and others are what attract many wildlife lovers to the Rajaji National Park.
