Amazing though it may sound, the ‘Tiger’ found all over India is the Bengal Tiger! The tiger, unlike the lion, leads a solitary life, its savage beauty long regarded as the symbol of the Indian wilderness.
Unlike many cats, tigers (Panthera tigris tigris), are not averse to water, but are good swimmers. Though tiger pugmarks that are used in a census; their facial stipes are unique too (quite like us!)

For a wildlife enthusiast, there is nothing quite like clean fresh air, good infrastructure and a jungle that promises plenty of wildlife sightings. The Corbett National Park in Uttarakhand assures all that and then some more. The park is just not a wildlife haven but also offers a host of opportunities like fishing and angling. Named after the famous hunter and an ardent conservationist - Jim Corbett, the park has always been famous for their resident tigers. Perhaps that is why it draws tourist from all over the country.

Corbett National Park

Known as Hailey National Park (in 1936) initially, the park was renamed in 1954-55 as Ramganga National Park and again in 1955-56 as Jim Corbett National Park. A fitting tribute to the man, we know as Jim Corbett. Jim Corbett hunted down tigers that had turned man-eaters and also spearhead wildlife preservation. Jim Corbett National Park is among the oldest National Parks in India. The park was one of the nine Tiger Reserves created at the launch of the Project Tiger in 1973

Jim Corbett National Park is located in the foothills of the mighty Himalayas. Corbett Tiger Reserve lies mainly in the hilly districts of Nainital, Almora and Pauri Garhwal. The Tiger Reserve covers an area of 1318.54 sq km and includes within it the Corbett National Park (520.82 sq km), Sonanadi Wildlife Sanctuary (301.18 sq km) and Kalagarh Reserve Forest (496.54 sq km).

Ramganga river

The park is drained by the magnificent Ramganga River that flows through the entire length of the park. While dense sal forests cloak the higher ridges, mixed deciduous forests are found throughout the Park and over 110 varieties of trees, 51 species of shrubs and over 33 kinds of bamboo's and grasses are seen here. At one point of time Corbett had the highest density of tiger in the country - approximately one every 5 sq. km.

The topography of the park is varied and is dotted with ravines, plateaus, marshy depressions and grasslands. The vegetation here is dense mixed deciduous with a wide variety of trees including the stately sal, and creepers, shrubs, bamboos and grasses.

Tiger Spotting in Corbett National Park
Park Timings &
Best Time to Visit

Park Timings:
The park normally opens at 0600 to 1100 hrs in the morning and from 1430 to 1730. However time varies in summer and winter.

Best Time to Visit:
The Park is open from November to June and best time to visit is in May – June, when chances of wildlife sightings are high.

No matter how rare it to sight the big cat, ironically it is the main draw to the Corbett National Park Majority of wildlife lovers come to Corbett for the tigers — of which there were, at the last estimation, approximately 140. The number may be inspiring but there’s no guarantee that you’ll see a tiger — that, of course, is part of the thrill. But the best time of year for tiger-spotting is April to mid-June.

You may enhance your chances of seeing a tiger by travelling inside the park by jeep, since you will be able to cover a much wider area in the time available. Only a combination of good guide and good luck can help you spot a tiger. A guide should well-versed in listening for warning cries and knowing the habits of the animal. The down-side, however is that even if a tiger is spotted many end up in a minor traffic jam (when a tiger is seen), with many jeeps converging on the same spot.

Other animals in Corbett National Park
Elephants crossing Ramganga river

Besides tiger, there are a number of other animals in the Corbett National Park. Elephants are among one of the main attractions, which can be spotted along the shores of the Ramganga River. There, one can also spot the gharial and crocodile. Also seen on the rocky hillsides of the park are goat antelopes. The langurs are commonly seen and are well distributed throughout the Jim Corbett National Park. They in fact are the one responsible for spreading the warning signals to the whole jungle with alarm calls when they see either a tiger or leopard from tree-top perches.

Fishing & Angling

Fishing in Corbett National ParkIf looking for a different experience in Corbett, try your hand at fishing and angling, which is allowed in the Ramganga, Kosi, Mandal and Kothri rivers with a special permit. It may cost around Rs 500 per day per beat to hire a rod. Many resorts such as the Vanganga Lodge and Corbett Riverside Resort will be happy to arrange angling trips (including permits, equipment, transfers, etc) at an extra charge.

Jim Corbett National Park is also home to deer, wild boar and some lesser-known animals. Leopards are mostly found in the hilly areas of the park. Sloth bear is found in the lower regions of the Corbett National Park while the Himalayan black bear is seen in the higher hills only. The dole or wild dog are seen in the southern areas of the park along with the jackal. There are other animals as well, which include otters, mongooses and snakes.

Bird lovers can visit the park from mid-December to end-March, when most migratory birds are seen. The park is home to more than 600 species of birds - about half of the total species found in the entire Indian subcontinent! You can see thrushes, owls, orioles, parakeets, drongos, babblers, cuckoos, bee eaters, doves, bulbuls, rollers, warblers, robins, flycatchers, chats, finches, hornbills, kingfishers and many others.

Places to see in & around Corbett National Park
Corbett Museum

Corbett Museum:  Once the winter home of Jim Corbett at Choti Haldwani on the outskirts of Kaladungi is now turned into a museum.  It is located 32 km from Corbett, half way between the park and Nainital

Nainital: A well known weekend retreat and a popular tourist destination, Nainital is located 87 km from Corbett. It is bustling town with many hotels and shops surrounding the Naini Lake.

Corbett for Kids

Earth Camps offer educational and exciting programs for kids. They give children first-hand experience of their natural environment. A team of naturalists take groups of kids from schools or as groups to specially selected sites to study plant and animal diversity. Earth Camps offer programs that support school curricula in biology and natural sciences, and their camp at Sitabani Reserve Forest on the outskirts of Corbett is quite popular.

Places to stay in Corbett National Park
There are many hotels and places to stay at Ramnagar as well as at the Corbett National Park. Being one of the most popular parks in the country, the forest department and other agencies have their hotels, lodges, rest houses and log huts there. Government Forest Rest Houses are best to stay. In Dhikala you can choose to stay in Old Forest Rest House, Tourist Hutments or Log Hut. Hotels in Corbett
