India's waters, its rivers, streams, and lakes rivers - yes, all of an estimated 50,000 km them - can be a pleasant surprise!

Apart from the sheer thrill that fishing rewards you with - whether a pro, a beginner or just and interested onlooker - most fishing areas are also very scenic and rich in wildlife allowing one to enjoy nature up close in a different way.

Cauvery, the majestic river of south India makes its way through the lush forests of Karnataka to the coast of Tamil Nadu. Also known as Kaveri, the river provides ample opportunities to indulge in fishing and catching the Mahaseer, perhaps the largest and most challenging sporting river fish. Favourite among the discerning travellers are the Cauvery fishing and nature camps, which make for exciting holiday destinations.

Cauvery Fishing

A perfect escape for nature lovers and people looking for a different holiday experience in complete harmony with nature, Cauvery fishing and nature camps are great getaways. The very sight of the Cauvery will tempt you to step onto its banks and feel the water lapping at your feet. An exciting way to have fun is to take a boat and head out to fish in the waters of the mighty river. Nothing is more satisfying and exciting then to succeed in catching a Mahaseer and proclaiming your catch to your family and even getting your photograph clicked with the prized trophy!

Located not too far from Bangalore, these camps offer a slice of nature that is unique, rugged, and breathtakingly beautiful. It is also an ideal wilderness retreat for the (non-fishing) nature lovers, who just want to have a good time and recharge their batteries.

Fishing and Nature Camps
Fishing Camps

Bheemeshwari
Nestled along the banks of the Cauvery is the Bheemeshwari Fishing Camp, one of the finest places in the region to enjoy fishing and to have a good time. The area abounds in Mahaseer- the finest game fish (that can weigh up to 45 kg). The camp offer comfortable tents equipped with all basic facilities like cots, shower, mosquito nets and toilet.
The best time to visit for fishing is between October and April. Temperatures hover around the 30 degree C mark during the day in winters and 10 degree C in the nights. The weather is mild in the winters and the place is more comfortable in the outdoors that time of the year.

Galibore Fishing

Galibore
Another exciting place to set base is Galibore, 95 km from Bangalore and just 16 km away from Bheemeshwari. With the river flowing in front and hills on the either side, Galibore is set amidst a wilderness of gigantic terminalia arjuna trees. An exciting sight here would be to watch wild elephants that often come to the banks of the river.

Doddamakali Camps

Doddamakali
Situated 6 km upstream from Bheemeshwari is Doddamakali Camp. This remote and the most rugged yet beautiful place has a charm of its own.  An excellent destination for the one looking for complete solitude, Doddamakali is a great place for soul searching or just having a blast with a set of friends. Here the Cauvery is calm and looks like a large pool which is ideal for water sports. Doddamakali can be reached either by a direct road route, the final part of which is very steep and needs a four wheel drive jeep to negotiate the last few kilometers or you can park at Bheemeshwari and trek 6 km to Doddamakali.

Place to stay
There are a good number of camps and lodges, which offer comfortable accommodation for tourists visiting various Cauvery fishing and nature camps. For more on lodges and camps check hotels in Nagarhole National Park.

Getting there
Must see

Visit the ruins of an ancient Shiva temple adjoining the Bheemeshwari camp. One can also interact with the Soliga aboriginal tribals living close by and learn their primitive survival skills, passed down over the millennia. The Mekedaatu water falls, Sangam and the Simsha water falls are other places worth visiting.

Most camps are situated at Bheemeshwari or in and around Bheemeshwari. Bheemeshwari is 100 km from Bangalore via Kanakapura/Halagur and is accessible by road. It is 85 km from Mysore via Malavalli and 245 km from Ooty (Udhagamandalam) via Mysore.

The nearest airport is Bangalore and the nearest railhead is Mysore.
