Once referred as the "Brighton of the East" in one of Warren Hastings’ letters (1780 AD) to his wife, Digha located is 187 km south-west of Kolkata is West Bengal's most popular sea resort and tourist spot. The beach’s scenic beauty enhanced by picturesque sunrise and sunsets, swaying casuarinas plantations and crystal clear waters is simply alluring all the more reasons for the weary Kolkattans to head towards it for a much needed weekend break.

Marine Aquarium

Being a sea side resort, there is nothing much to see at Digha except lazing on the beach, taking leisurely strolls and having a good time. In Digha, the sea starts about a mile away from the start of the beach and is supposedly to be the widest sea beach in the world. Also, unlike most beaches, the shallow beach of Digha is also ideal for a swim, since it has a low gradient with gentle waves extending 7 km in length. Apart from swimming, you can also play volleyball, try some cool coconut water or simply go for a drive. New Digha, an extension of the old town is also a charming beach with a few hotels. A Science Center and a Science Park established by the National Council of Science Museum is located here as also a Marine Aquarium - said to be Asia’s largest, a snake farm and a small park with a lake called the Amravati Lake.

Chandaneswar Temple

After a day on the beach you can head towards Chandaneswar located 8 km from Digha for a glimpse of an old Shiva Temple and also to Lankeswari, 14 km away. Kapal Kundala Temple (45 km) is famous for an ancient temple associated with Bankimchandra's novel Kapal Kundala.

But, if it is beaches that you want then head to Shankarpur 14 km east of Digha, along the Digha – Contai Road and Junput (40 km). The unspoiled beaches of Shankarpur and Junput have all the advantages of Digha, minus the crowd. A fishing harbor, centre for studies in marine biology and a farm for breeding ducks and fish cultivation are also located at Shankarpur and Junput respectively.

By Road: There are regular bus services between Digha and Kolkata. C.S.T.C. Express buses ply from Esplanade (Kolkata) to Digha regularly.
