A beautiful fishing village and a famous weekend getaway from Mumbai, Murud is about 5-hours drive from Mumbai. Quite popular among Mumbaikars, Murud is a picturesque holiday destination that has a large number of betel nut and coconut trees. Murud-Janjira is located in Raigarh district of Maharashtra.

Murud is well known for its beautiful beach and greenery around. The beach is ideal for swimming. Boating and deep sea fishing are popular activities that one can indulge in when on a trip to Murud-Janjira.

Murud is also a historically important destination. It was once the capital of the Janjira State. The Nawabs of Janjira ruled the area from here. The Janjira Fort that juts out into the sea is located not too far from Murud.


Places to See
Murud Beach

Murud Beach is the prime attraction in Murud-Janjira. The beach is almost 2 km long and is flanked by rocky outcrops. It is a white sandy beach and a good place to spend time. One can indulge in number activities here. Swimming is a popular activity. Tourists can also opt for boating and deep sea fishing.

Though there are no warning signs on the beach, do watch out for the danger zone at the far left of the beach. Two poles with saffron flags mark the danger sign there.

Janjira Fort

Janjira Fort is another popular attraction, which is located about 6 km away from Murud. It is a massive fort that dates back to the 16th century and is surrounded by the Arabian Sea. The fort was believed to have been built by the Siddis, who hailed from a place called Habeesh (Abyssinia), near Africa.

Janjira Fort rises 90 ft above the sea with a 20 ft strong foundation. It is believed that it took 22 years to build the fort, which spreads across 22 acres and has 22 outposts. The British, the Portuguese, Shivaji, Chimaji Appa, Kanhoji Angre and Sambhaji all tried to conquer the fort. So much so that Sambhaji set his camp at Kasa Fort, waiting for the right moment to conquer Janjira. He planted a mango seed the year he arrived. The tree grew, Sambhaji partook of its fruit, but the fort never fell.

Datta Mandir, Murud-Janjira

There are quite a few places around Murud-Janjira that one can explore. Nandgaon, a hilly terrain is eight kilometers from Murud-Janjira. Nandgaon is famous for the magnificent Shri Siddhivinayaka Temple and its pristine beach. The shrine witnesses a huge in-flow of tourists during the month of February, when Ganesh Utsav is celebrated with pomp and splendour.

About four km from Murud is a picnic spot that goes by the name of Carambi Dharan (Dam). It provides clean water to Murud throughout the year channeled from its natural springs. Datta Mandir atop a hill is located not too far from Murud. The 300-year-old temple offers lovely view of the sea.

Padmadurg Fort is another major tourist attraction around Murud-Janjira. The fort is spread over a vast area of about 9 acres. The fort is a one among the major sea forts in India. Padmadurg Fort is constructed by the Marathas in order to capture the Janjira Fort which is located near by. The fort is also known as Kasa Fort.

How to reach Murud-Janjira and Best time to go

By Air: Mumbai is the nearest airport. The airport is 170 km away from Murud-Janjira.

By Train: Roha is the nearest railway station on the Konkan line. Roha to Murud Janjira takes about an hour by taxi.

By Road: Buses are available from Pune, Thane, Borivli, Mumbai central and Dadar.

By sea: Regular ferry service is available from Ferry Warf up to Rewas (23 km) starting at 6 in the morning through 6 pm. Ferry services are not available during monsoon season.

Best time to go: October to May is the best time visit Murud-Janjira.
