A weekend at a secluded picturesque hill-station, enjoying the pristine natural beauty can be refreshing by itself! Kudremukh, one such destination is located around 95 kms south-west of Chikmaglur. The hill station is so named because of the unique shape of a horse face of the Kudremukh (literally meaning ‘horse-face’) Peak.

Overlooking the Arabian Sea, the broad hills are chained to one another with deep valleys and steep abyss. Natural grasslands and thick forests interspersed with rivers and the rich natural beauty are well-retained by nature in this yet ‘undiscovered’ land.

Kudremukh is known for mining ores. Being a part of the majestic Western Ghats, it is famous for bio-diversity conservation and is recognized as one of the hot spots in the world. The profitable business of mining iron-ores have  infused fresh life to this part of Western Ghats and helped this region grow into a buzzing hill station.

The trails passing through lush green forests, the captivating cascades, the grassy slopes and the rare orchids make Kudremukh an idyllic trekking background. For nature lovers, visit to Kudremukh would be exciting & breathtaking; while for the city jaded souls, Kudremukh would be refreshing and rejuvenating.


Places to See
Kudremukh National Park

Kudremukh National Park: Spread over an area of about 600 square meters, the tropical evergreen wet forest - Kudremukh National Park  is the main attraction for visitors. Placed under the Global Tiger Conservation Priority-I, the Kudremukh National Park in the Western Ghats, it is declared as Wildlife Protected Area.

Formed in 1987, this national park protects the endangered mammals and rare species, including the three large predator species - wild dogs, leopard and tigers. The forest is also the natural habitat of many other wild animals such as common languar, wild pig, sambar and lion tailed macaque.

There are 13 trekking trails in Kudremukh National Park to suit a variety of preferences with well-maintained Kerekatte forest rest house and the Navoor forest rest house near Belthangadi for the use of trekkers.

Gangamoola : A part of the Western Ghats, Gangamoola, or Varaha Parvatha borders National Park close to Kudremukh. With an altitude of 1458 m above sea level the hill is acclaimed as the source of three rivers Tunga, Bhadra and Netravathi originating from Western Ghats. The densely populated hills is the habitat of many rare species of birds and is also very rich in minerals deposits.

It is one of the UNESCO designated World Heritage Site. A cave, which is inaccessible during the rainy monsoon seasons, enclosing a 6 feet image of Varaha and the temple of Goddess Bhagavathi are the main attractions here.

Lakya Dam,Kudremukh

Lakya Dam : Built by Kudremukh Iron Ore Company, Lakya Dam is a check dam across the tributary of Bhadra river - Lakya, having a height of 100 m. The main utility of this dam is to collect the waste materials from the mining operations and since it is a dam of silt not water. Set against the backdrop of picturesque hilly terrains, shoal forests and calmly flowing rivers, the dam attracts lot of tourists.

Timings Weekdays 4.30-6.30 pm, Sundays 9.30 am to 6.30 pm.

Hanuman Gundi Falls: One of the main attractions close to Kudremukh is Hanuman Gundi waterfalls. Slashing down from a height of more than 100 feet, the waterfall touches the natural rocks majestically. With exciting scenery around, one can trek for some distance to get into the falls or just enjoy the marvel of the waterfalls. The forest department has constructed some nice and safe steps to get down into the falls for a nominal Rs 30/- per head.

Kudremukh Peak: Kudremukh peak is located as high as 1894 m above the sea level with forests covering the peak. It’s a trekker's paradise with plethora of flora and fauna in the offing to be explored. Overlooking the Arabian sea, this peak offers a breath-taking view of the distant horizon and it’s also well-known for the navigators. The broad hills connected to each other like a chain, with deep plains and valleys are enchanting.


Places near Kudremukh

Kalasa: 20 km away from Kudremukh lies the small town of Kalasa, encircled by a host of interesting places to visit. The must-visits are the Panchatirtha, the five sacred ponds - Rudra Tirtha, Vasishtha Tirtha (6 km), Amba Tirtha (8 km), Varaha Tirtha (30 km) and finally Naga Tirtha (35 km). Close to Amba Tirtha is a huge boulder called Bheemana Kallu that bears a Sanskrit inscription stating that Sri Madhavacharya (founder of the Dvaita School of philosophy) brought and placed it here with one hand. There are quite a few other temples in the vicinity too.

Horanadu

Horanadu: The Annapoorneshwari Temple in Horanadu is  28 km from the valleys of Kudremukh. Other temples worth visiting are the Kaleshwara Temple dedicated to Shiva & the Girijamba Temple. The place beams with festivity during the 3-day festival “Girija Kalyanotsav”, celebrating the marriage between Kaleshwara and Girijamba is held here just after Diwali.

How to reach Kudremukh and Best time to go

By Air: Mangalore is the nearest domestic airport, which is 130 km away and Bangalore is the nearest international airport, which is 350 km away. Cab costs about Rs 2500 from Mangalore and Rs 6000 from Bangalore. Both the nearest national & international terminals are connected to Chennai and other major cities of India.

By Rail: Nearest major Railway Station is Mangalore, which is connected by rail to many cities in India.

By Road: Kudremukh is well connected by KSRTC bus services. Private and public transport buses connect frequently to Karkala (50 km), Bangalore (350 km) and Mangalore (130 km). A/C deluxe and luxury buses are available from Bangalore and Mangalore to Kudremukh.

Best Time to go: Best season is from October to May, avoid monsoon.
