Sunderbans literally means ‘beautiful jungle’ and while the name may have been derived from the Sundari trees that are found in Sunderbans in large numbers. Sunderbans, the largest mangrove ecosystem in the world was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1985 and was honored as a Biosphere Reserve in 1989; proof of the unique piece of our planet that it is.

The Sunderbans beckons to many, the sheer offbeat mystique, both inspires and awes us, but unlike many offbeat and remote places, Sunderbans today is comfortably accessible and that too through a never-before experience of a river cruise. This adventurous trip through the maze of waterways, villages and amazing flora and fauna of the Sunderbans promises to be a memorable journey.

Sunderbans Mangroves

Criss-crossed by a complex network of tidal waterways, mangrove forests and small islands, Sunderbans boasts a mix of dense mangrove forests, fabulous wildlife and a unique biodiversity that leaves a mark on all those who visit it. Sunderbans is one of the largest deltas in the world and is formed by the rivers Ganges, Bhahmaputra and Meghna. Spread across Bangaldesh and West Bengal, Sunderbans covers an area of 4262 sq. km in India. Out of the 102 islands at Sunderbans, 54 are inhabited and the people here, make a living from agriculture, fishing and honey collection. This well known as the home to the Royal Bengal Tiger flaunts 84 species of mangrove and mangrove-related plants, over 200 species of birds, crocodiles, snakes and many more wild species. But what attracts every person are the over 400 Royal Bengal Tigers with a man eating fetish, that roam these mangroves.

Piyali: About 72 kilometers from Kolkata is Piyali, the gateway to the Sunderbans. Here a small river Piyali flows through the green paddy fields and joins the Malta River. Piyali is close to Sajnekhali, Netidhopani and Sudhanyakhali through waterways. Piyali is also home to a beautiful tourist complex, which offer a number of accommodation and recreation facilities.

Sajnekhali Bird Sanctuary: Situated on the confluence of Matla and Gumdi, the Sajnekhali Bird Sanctuary is a good place to visit. The Sajnekhali Bird Sanctuary is home a large number of birds. The most popular among them are the Spotted Billed Pelican, Caspian Tern, Cotton Teal, Herring Gull, Grey Heron, Large Egret, Night Heron, Open Billed Stork, White Ibis, Common Kingfisher, Brahmini Kite and Paradise Flycatcher.

Kaikhali Island: A wonderful picnic spot, it is hard to miss the Kaikhali Island on your way to Sunderbans. It is a beautiful spot where nature is alive and colorful.

Netidhopani: At Netidhopani, you may find the ruins of a 400 year old temple that lend a mystery touch to Netidohopani.

Kanak: Kanak is the nesting place of the Olive Ridley Turtles.

Bhagabatpur: Bhagabatpur is famous for having a hatchery of the largest estuarine crocodiles in the world.

Haliday Island: Haliday Island is famous spot where you can find Barking Dear.

Tigers in the Sunderbans: Tigers have a sizeable presence in the Sunderbans but they are hardly seen, though their presence is always sensed. Sajnekhali Tiger Reserve across the Gumdi River is home to the Royal Bengal Tiger. The reserve is spread over 362 sq km and has an incredible variety of flora and fauna. Cruising along the sanctuary is a learning experience as you get to see and learn about mangrove forests and its various characteristics.
