It’s historical, it’s traditional and it’s exciting; Lucknow earlier Awadh is surely like no other city in India

India’s first mannerism (tehjeeb) city – Lucknow is as steeped in culture and tradition as it is in history. A byword for cultural refinement, Lucknow has the distinction of being a city where the Urdu language was refined, where kothas were believed to be the last word in etiquettes, for young nawabs were sent there to learn a lesson in mannerism. Lucknow or Awadh as it was called earlier is like no other city in India. It’s historical, it’s traditional and it’s exciting. An amazing city for people with appetite for good food, Lucknow no doubt is certainly a good place for a family vacation.

Though having been on the forefront in culture and tradition for years, Lucknow was never as important as Delhi or Agra. It has always been a provincial seat and not an epicenter of power as were Agra and Delhi during the Mughal rule. This perhaps was the blessing in disguise that Lucknow remained oblivious of all the upheavals in Delhi and could keep its character intact.

Lucknow’s fame began in 1775, when Asafuddaulah, 4th Nawab of Avadh, abandoning the Avadhi capital Faizabad went to set up court in Lucknow, on the banks of the Gomti. He was the man, who gave a distinct character to the city by planning ingenious schemes and thinking of innovative buildings and gardens. Never before in the history had this average town heard or seen anything like the Imambaras that housed the replicas of martyrs’ tombs, the stately mosques and the ornamented gates.

Gautam Buddha Park is close to the Bara Imambara and the Martyrs Memorial, this park has been a recreation ground for children. Rides here are a big draw. The Elephant or the Hathi Park is another recreation park in Lucknow. The lemon park or the Nimbu Park of the Bara Imambara is also very popular.

Bada Imambara: A well known landmark in Lucknow, Bada Imambara (also called Asafi Imambara) was built by Asaf-ud-Daula in the year 1784 as a part of the famine relief project.  A number of labourers were appointed to build this Imambara. An Imambara is a big vaulted hall with a length of 50 m and a height of 15 m. The famous 'Bhul Bhulaiyan' (Labyrinth) is part of Bada Imambara complex. The complex also includes a mosque, which has two tall minarets in the courtyard. Non-Muslims are not allowed inside the mosque.

Jami Masjid: The mosque was started by Mohammed Shah but he could not see the completion of the mosque and died in 1840. The mosque was later completed by his wife. Jami Masjid is the largest mosque of Lucknow. The mosque has wonderful paintings on the ceilings with the leaf and fruit bowl patterns. The Jami Masjid is located on the western side of the Hussainabad Imambara.

Rumi Darwaza: Like Imamabadas, the Rumi Darwaza was also built as a relief work during the famine of 1783 by Asaf-ud-Daula. He also built a number of historical monuments during his time.

Hussainabad Imambara: Also known as Chhota Imambara, this was built by Mohammed Ali Shah in 1837. It is believed to be the mausoleum of Mohammed Ali Shah and other members of his family. The Imambada has a silver faced throne and its walls are decorated with Arabic calligraphy. Just outside is the unfinished watchtower called ‘Satkhanda’ or seven storeys. Only four of the floors were completed.

Picture Gallery: The picture gallery is another important place of tourist interest in Lucknow. It was built in the 19th century near the clock tower of Hussainabad Imambara. The picture gallery has a number of portraits of almost all the Nawabs of Lucknow. The Picture Gallery is a good way to get an insight into the past of Lucknow when the Nawabs used to be the sole authority.

Banarsi Bagh: It is a zoo that is commonly known as Banarsi Bagh. The zoo offers good views of the green surroundings and the tiny cages of some of the animal species. The zoo also has an aquarium and a toy train. Within the zoo is the state museum where a number of impressive historical items are kept. The splendid collection of stone sculptures that have been brought from Mathura is a must see. Besides, there is also an Egyptian mummy, which is a big draw for people.
