Karnataka with its 320 Kms long coastline dotted with numerous beaches beckon the one looking for respite from the maddening grind of urban life. Karwar just 250 kms from Mangalore is certainly the best place to head for a family holiday. A peaceful beach, which offers serenity and unspoilt charm and known for the spontaneity of the coastal folk, is a great place for a family vacation. Karwar stands on the banks of Kali River and was an important trade centre and a former settlement of the British and the Portuguese.
Karwar is a small port town situated 100 kms from Goa and 260 Km north of Mangalore. It is tucked between the sea on one side and the Western Ghats on the other. As you enter Karwar, you come face to face with the sea dotted with several small islands on the horizon. Devbagh, one of the popular islands about 3 kms away is a centre for diving and snorkeling.

Such is the tranquillity and beauty of Karwar that it inspired the famed poet, Rabindranath Tagore to pen his first play here. It is not only beaches that make Karwar a great family getaway, it is also known for its historic towns and sacred temples. Good diving and snorkelling opportunities nearby further add to its popularity. It is also a good place to head for many nature excursions around.

Dargah of Peer Shan Shamsuddin Kharobat: The famous Dargah of Peer Shan Shamsuddin Kharobat, a Baghdadi Saint is a place of tourist interest for pilgrims.

Naganatha Temple: Naganatha Temple is a temple where an anthill is worshipped.

Kurmagad Island: A visit by launch to the Kurmagad Island, which has an old fort and a Narasimha shrine, is a must. A river cruise a kind of its own is a good option to take with kids.

Devbagh Beach and Kurumgad Island offer exciting opportunities for diving and snorkelling. Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary is a must visit. The local cuisine of the Karwar region is spicy and flavourful. Do check out the local specialities such as Bunpuri, Kalwa Sukka, Oyster Bondas and Misul.

Gokarna: 60 Kms south of Karwar, Gokarana is an excellent coastal town that has among other things, an ancient temple with the Atmalinga. Gokarna is also a famous centre for Sanskrit learning. The Om Beach and Kutle Beach nearby are also worth a visit. Read more on Gokarana

Honnavar: Honnavar, 90 Kms from Karwar, has a laterite fort of Portuguese times. Basavaraja Durga Island, a fort amidst the sea, can be reached by launch from here.

Bhatkal: 135 Kms south of Karwar is a historical township. Bhatkal, an ancient port town has temples of Vijayanagar style and many interesting Jain monuments. Just 16 kms away is the scenic holy place of Murdeshwar. The temple here attracts a lot of devotees and tourists.

Banavasi: 140 Kms from Karwar, is a temple town mentioned in the Hindu epics, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata.

Dandeli: 93 Kms from Karwar, it is a popular holiday resort. The wildlife sanctuary here abounds with a variety of rare animals. The cave with Shivalinga-like laterite formations is also well worth a visit.

Ulavi: 75 kms from Karwar (via Kumbarawada), Ulavi is a famous pilgrim centre. Thousands of people come here to pay homage to the samadhi of Veera Shiva Saint Channabasavanna, who took refuge here from the army of 'Kalachurias'.

By Air: The nearest airport is at Goa, though entry points are also at Belgaum and Mangalore.

By Rail: Hubli is the nearest rail junction.

By Road: Karwar is well connected by road from various cities in Karnataka and Goa. Road distance of nearby cities: Bangalore- 520 kms, Belgaum- 167 kms, Mangalore- 273 kms, Panjim (Goa) - 100 kms.

You can also take Kadamba State Transport Corporation Bus to Karwar from Madgaon Bus stand. The Karwar Beach is located about 1.5 kms from the Karwar Bus Stand.
