Scenic beauty, orchids and a fascinating travel experience – Gangtok is surely a good place to go to. The capital city of one of India’s smallest states (Sikkim), Gangtok conjures ../../images of orchids, the Kanchenjunga and the Buddhist monasteries that dot its hills. It may not be a destination for kids in a conventional way but it surely is a place to take your kids to. A good family vacation destination, Gangtok offers a relaxing and laidback holiday experience.

Gangtok is a small town that is situated atop a ridge, at an altitude of 5,800 ft. The city is set beautifully overlooking the river Ranikhola and the world's third tallest peak Kanchenjunga on the east. ‘Lofty Hill' as it means, Gangtok was said to have been a small village until it became an important pilgrimage centre with the building of the Enchey Monastery in 1840. With the end of the monarchical rule in 1975, Sikkim came to be known as the official state of India with its capital at Gangtok.

Travelling with kids and grown-ups to Gangtok requires planning and detailing as to what places to visit, where to stay and what mode of transport to choose for local sight-seeing. It is a destination that both young and adults enjoy; it is a good mix and has something for everyone. Gangtok may be a good learning experience on Buddhism for grown up children. There are many monasteries around, and most of them have some interesting stories attached. Buy a guidebook on Gangtok and help children know about various places of importance in and around Gangtok.

Flower Exhibition Centre
Open April – June and September – December. Daily 8 am to 4 pm.

Gangtok has a number of places of tourist interest like Ganesh Tok, Hanuman Tok and Tashi View Point. The best way however, if you can, to explore Gangtok is on foot. Just head out of the main town and take small walks to nearby areas. The scenery is beautiful and on a clear day you may see the Kanchenjunga and other peaks staring you on the face. Some other places worth exploring in Gangtok include:

Enchey Monastery: The 200-yar old Enchey Monastery is situated next to the Tourist Lodge, about 3 kms from the centre of town. The monastery is worth a visit particularly if you're in Gangtok in December-January when annual religious dances are performed here.

Deer Park: An important landmark, the Deer Park is a popular viewpoint located next to the Secretariat building. The park as the name suggests has deer and a statue of the Buddha, which is a replica of that stands at Sarnath near Varanasi. A good time to visit the park is when the deer are fed at 7.30 am.

Namgyal Institute: Travellers interested in Buddhism must visit the Institute of Tibetology or Namgyal Institute. Home to priceless antiques, rare scriptures and gorgeous thangkas, the institute specializes in the study of the Tibetan language, culture and spiritual literature. The Namgyal Institute was built in the year 1958. Built in a traditional style, this institute has world’s largest collections of books and rare manuscripts on Mahayan Buddhism, in addition to the works of art and silk embroidered Tankhas. The institute also houses samples of Lepcha scripts, relics of monks, masks and sacred objects like Kapali, a bowl made from a human skull, and the carku, a flute made from a thigh bone.

Lall Market: A good place to roam around and shop, Lall Market is also the main landmark from where you can get shared jeeps to go to Rumtek and other nearby places. Old Bazaar and Super Market are other places to go for shopping.

Tsuk-La-Khang: Set in an impressive building with interior covered with murals and lavishly decorated altars holding ../../images of the Buddha, Bodhisatvas and Tantric deities; the Tsuk – La – Khang is the principal place of worship. It is also the repository of a large collection of Buddhist scriptures. Open every day to visitors but no photography is allowed inside.

Rumtek Monastery: Probably the most talked about monastery in Sikkim, the Rumtek Monastery is visible from Gangtok on the other side of the Ranipool valley. 24 kms away from Gangtok, the monastery is the seat of the Gyalwa Karmapa, the head of the Kagyu-pa sect of Tibetan Buddhism. The sect was founded in the 11th century by Lama Marpa who was the disciple of Naropa. The main monastery here was built by the Gyalwa Karmapa strictly in accordance to the traditional architectural designs of Tibetan monasteries.
Pemayangtse Monastery: Situated at a height of 2085 meters, Pemayangtse Monastery is the 2nd oldest monastery in Sikkim. The monastery belongs to the Nyingma-pa sect, which was established by Padma Sambhava in the 8th century. All monasteries of this sect are characterised by a prominent image of the teacher together with two female consorts. The followers of the sect wear red caps.

Orchid Sanctuary: A must visit in Gangtok; the Orchid Sanctuary is famous for its rare and varied collection of orchids. The sanctuary’s collection also varies depending on the seasons. However, the wide spread orchid sanctuary has almost 454 species of orchid found in Sikkim. A must visit for nature lovers. Open Monday to Friday and every other Saturday from10 am to 4 pm.
