Monsoon Getaways from Kolkata - Hill Station Shillong
| Places to see | Places to stay | How to reach | Fast Facts |

Known for its scenic vistas and cool climes, Shillong aptly fits as a scenic and relaxing getaway in the North-east of India. Situated at a height of 1496 meters above sea level, Shillong is just 3 hours drive from Guwahati. Though the best time to visit Shillong is from September to May, the hill station looks amazing as the rains subside leaving the capital city of Meghalaya wet and freshly washed.

Shillong

Shillong wears a green gown; trees look rejuvenated and young; the Sun plays hide and seek with the clouds, and at times you may see clouds rushing down to kiss the high rise mountain peaks. No wonder, why Shillong is often called Scotland of the East. Though, the Raj era feel is vanishing by the time, you can still find a few remnants of the British, who are credited to have brought Shillong on the world tourism map.

The capital of Meghalaya (one of the eight north-eastern states - Assam, Nagaland, Tripura, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim), Shillong is located on the eastern part of the state. The Umshyrpi and the Umkhra rivers, which finally merge and form the Umiam River, water it. The city derives its name from “Leishyllong”—the Superpower or God who is believed to reside on the Shillong Peak, overlooking the city.

Places to See
Ward's Lake

Besides, taking a stroll down the Police Bazaar, one can also take a walk to Ward’s Lake. Butterfly Museum (11 am -4 pm), just 1 km away is an interesting place to visit. The museum displays a wide spectrum of butterflies found in Meghalaya. Tribal Research Institute not too far has colourful textiles on display. Arunachal Pradesh Museum, 3 km away from Shillong is a good source to know more about the state as it has on display a number of exquisite items from the state. Botanical Garden & Museum (9.30- 6 pm) is another interesting place to visit. It is located 2 km away from Arunachal Pradesh. You can also visit Lady Haydari Park, which has a mini zoo inside. The park stands near Pine Mount School

Shillong Peak

Shillong Peak, 10 km from the city is a popular tourist attraction for travellers visiting Shillong. The peak is at a height of 1965 m above sea level and offers a panoramic view of the scenic country side. On a clear day, one can see the eastern Himalaya, including Gorichen (22,000 ft), the highest peak in Arunachal Pradesh.

Cherrapunjee
Another place of tourist interest is Sohra or Cherrapunjee (56 km away), that was the district headquarters of the British Administration from 1835 to 1864. Take a pleasant drive to see roaring water falls leaping into deep gorges, including the famed Nohsngithiang falls. Cherrapunjee is also famous for its limestone caves and orange honey. Cherrapunjee, earlier known as a place that receives the highest rainfall in the world is must visit on your trip to Shillong.
