Ranchi

Ranchi, once the summer capital of Bihar, is capital of the newly carved state of Jharkhand today. Located in the heart of Chotanagpur at an altitude of 2,140 ft above sea level, Ranchi is the industrial and commercial hub of the region. Ranchi is well known for its scenic attractions. It is a fine mix of natural beauty and commercial entities; while on the one hand it has cascading waterfalls that are scattered around, on the other hand there are huge industries.

There are many scenic places of tourist interest in and around Ranchi that attract tourists. Ranchi also has a cultural wealth and is an important place for the study of tribal ways of life, which offers an ideal opportunity to those interested in Anthropology.

Places to see in & around Ranchi
Jagannathpur Temple, Ranchi

Jagannathpur Temple is a 17th century temple located on hillock is located 10 km from Ranchi. The temple is known for its beautiful architecture that resembles the architecture style of the Jagannath Temple of Puri. Tribal Research Institute and Museum (open 10.30- 17.00) on Morabadi Road has a collection of stone sculptures and is a rich source on life and history of tribal people of Chotanagpur. To further trace the tribal history of the region you can also visit Ranchi University Museum (11.00 -17.00). Ranchi Lake, Tagore Hill, Machali Ghar (on Kanke Road) and Ranchi Hill are other places of tourist interest that you may check out.  Gonda Hill, 9 km north of Ranchi is a fine picnic spot.

Hundru Falls

Cascading waterfalls around Ranchi are what attract many tourists. Hundru Falls, some 45 km away from Ranchi is an exciting place to visit especially during and after monsoon, when the Swarnarekha River falling from a height of 320 feet makes for a pretty picture. At the base of the fall, one can take a dip in a beautiful pool.

Dassam Falls, Ranchi

Johna Falls, 40 km away on the Purliya Highway is a popular picnic spot near the Kanchi River. It is also known as Gautam Dhara. There is a temple dedicated to Gautam Buddha and a rest house here. Every Tuesday and Saturday a fair is organised in Johna.  Dassam Falls, 34 km away on the Ranchi-Tata Highway falls from a height of about 144 feet, Kanchi River here makes a beautiful spectacle. Bathing is not safe here. 

Another place worth visiting is the Birsa Jaivik Udyan - the Zoological garden, located 16 km from Ranchi on the Ranchi-Patna National Highway near Ormanjhi. It is a good place to visit with kids.
