Monsoon Getaways from Mumbai / Delhi / Ahmedabad - Pachmarhi
| Places to see | Places to stay | How to reach | Fast Facts |

Wake up to a slight chill in the air, freshly brewed coffee and misty mornings after a brush of rain at this verdant jewel of a place called Pachmarhi- a saucer shaped valley located 3500 ft in the midst of the rocky Satpura ranges that looks like a verdant jewel post monsoons when the deciduous vegetation are in full bloom.

Pachmarhi

The one and only hill station of Madhya Pradesh, Pachmarhi with its crisp air, gurgling streams, gushing waterfalls, rugged hills, deep ravines and lush green forests clearly looks like a paradise on earth-untouched by the vagaries of commercialisation. Add to these gothic churches, sanatoriums and cemeteries, a slow hum drum lifestyle and you are lost in a labyrinth of time -a bygone era where people gave a friendly smile to an unknown stranger and sat at the local square discussing the daily gossip.

Places to see in Pachmarhi
Pachmarhi Biosphere Reserve
Pachmarhi Biosphere Preserve houses the Satpura National Park and Bori Sanctuary. The sanctuary is home to large number of animals including the bison, tiger, leopard, bear, four-horned deer, blue-bull and a rich variety of birds. The Satpura ranges are believed to be 150 million years old that make it even older to the Himalayas.
Pachmarhi Lake

An abundance of water spots distinguish Pachmarhi from the hill stations up North and with the monsoons in the air you can be sure that the streams, creeks and waterfalls will be overflowing with water, and fish dancing in the streams and little pools. So head towards the shallow 'Fairy Pool' which is ideal for kids; the Rajat Pratap or Big Fall - a 10 minute walk over rocks and boulders; the Jamuna Prapat or Bee Fall - a spectacular fall in the stream which provides drinking water to Pachmarhi; Tridhara (Piccadilly Circus) - where two streams meet in a junction and Vanshree Vihar (Pansy Pool) - a cool and shady place full of trees, ferns and semi-tropical vegetation. Adventure lovers can trek down 4 km to reach the base of the Duchess Falls (Jalawataran) to watch this cascading beauty in awe  and then can head for a swim at the rocky Saunder's Pool which is 2.5 km from the Duchess Falls.

Sunset at Dhupgarh

For some spectacular views of the sunset and surrounding areas head for Dhupgarh, the highest point in the Satpura range and the lingam shaped Chauragarh Peak – 4 km from the Mahadeo Hill. The Forsyth Point (also called Priyadarshni Point) - the vantage point from where Pachmarhi was discovered by Captain Forsyth in 1857 is another interesting place to visit. There is also the Handi Khoh - a deep ravine with a 91 m drop.
If a walk in the rain is what your heart desires, then take the scenic two hour walk along the bridle path to Astachal rejoining the road near the huge natural cave amphitheater of Reechgarh while passing by the Dorothy Deep Rock Shelter with its pre historic cave paintings.

Catholic Church in pachmarhi

For those interested in colonial art, there is the Catholic Church with its fine blend of French and Irish architecture and Belgian stained-glass windows and the Christ Church with its hemispherical dome and stained glass panes which present a gorgeous view as the sun rays pass through them. And for religiously inclined there are the Mahadeo and Chota Mahadeo shrines of Lord Shiva and Jata Shankar.

Nearby Places around Pachmarhi
Also if time permits, take a 78 kms ride to Tarnia from where you can see the Dudhi plateau and visit secluded tribal habitats like Patalkot –a subterranean valley that was cut off from rest of the world for most of 20th century.

Pachmarhi Caves

Besides being a verdant jewel, Pachmarhi is also an archaeological find with an astonishing range of centuries old rock paintings. The Dhuandhar caves show a group of archers with the typical Gond bun and hooped earrings; Bharat Neer has well executed animal paintings, pottery shards and microliths while Chieftain's Cave derives its name from a battle scene showing two chieftains on horse. There is also the Hearer's Cave, named after one of its paintings in which a man is depicted playing a harp; the Kites Crag hassome fine paintings and the Pandava Caves, where the five Pandava brothers stayed is also located here. In fact Pachmarhi takes its name from the Pandava Caves.
