Monsoon Getaways from Delhi / Mumbai / Ahmedabad - Orchha
| Places to see | Places to stay | How to reach | Fast Facts |

Orchha wears a pleasant look as rains lash this little town tucked at the border of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. Small streams overflow and the Betwa River that flows by the town seem to have gained a new lease of life for the season after resembling a dry creek for months. Popular for its forts and palaces, Orchha makes for an excellent monsoon getaway in Madhya Pradesh.

Orchha Palace

Monsoon may symbolise a lush green surrounding for many destinations but to Orchha, rains mean different things. Its historical monuments seem to have freshly washed, the dust has been wiped off and the buildings look ready to welcome the new travellers. The temperature has come down after hovering between 38 degree Celsius & above for months. The cenotaphs on the banks of the Betwa happily overlook the brimming river that flows with jest now. There is this pleasant smell in the air as the first rain drops hit the dry surface. This is Orchha for you in the rains.

Orchha, once the capital of Bundela Rajput chief Raja Rudra Pratap is home to a number of historical monuments. There are forts, palaces, a number of temples and chattries. Orchha has a unique place in history. The word ‘Orchha’ mean 'hidden'.

Places to see in Orchha
Raja Ram Temple

Orchha is certainly a place fit for a traveller interested in history and architecture. And almost all the major places of tourist interest in Orchha are within walking distance. The most popular landmarks in Orchha are Jehangir Mahal and Ram Raja Temple. Built as a residence palace for Jehangir, who was visiting Raja Bir Singh Ju Deo, the palace embodies the spirit of Bundela style of architecture. The east-facing facade when you enter through the ornate royal gateway is coated with turquoise tiles. Two stone elephants on either side of the main gate, one holding bell & other holding flowers in their trunks to welcome the arrival of noble guests still stand tall. Ram Raja Temple is unique as compared to other temples dedicated to Lord Ram, here the statue of Ram, Sita and Laxman are all in black stone. Chaturbhuj Temple not too far away from Raja Ram Temple is a fascinating structure built on a huge stone platform overlooks the Ram Raja Temple. A steep flight of steps takes you right inside the temple. Lotus emblems and other symbols of religious significance present the delicate exterior ornamentation, while the interior ceiling is simpler & high.

Cenotaphs in Orchha

Laxminarayan Temple about 3-4 km from Raja Ram Temple is situated on a mound and a steep road takes you there. Since, the temple is built on a mound it gives a panoramic view of the town. The 14 Chhatris or cenotaphs built in memory of former rulers of Bundhelkhand are about 5 km from Laxminarayan Temple located along the Kanchan Ghat of Betwa River. Chattries are basically memorials built in memory of nobles and kings.
