When the mercury shoots up in the northern plains, travellers make a bee line to cooler climes in the hills for a break. Mussoorie for its proximity and good tourism infrastructure has always been a favourite among travellers. But there are many, who give Mussoorie a miss when hoards tourist flock this beautiful hill station in the summer months. They rather, will wait till the rains reach Mussoorie and wash the hill station of its grime and dust.

Mussoorie and the Doon Valley below, wear a different colour when rains come tumbling down the hills. Houses and buildings look freshly washed, and the Mother Nature seems happy wearing her favourite green coat. The innumerable waterfalls come cascading down the green hills and the Kempty Falls is brimming and full of vigour and zest.

In fact as you drive up to Mussoorie from Dehradun, the scenery is breathtaking. As you ascent the hairpin bends and leave the commercial and crowded Dehradun behind, clouds seem to be within your reach. Below in the Doon Valley mists would be busy floating from one end to another.

Gandhi Chowk, Mussoorie

The Mall is the most well known landmark of Mussoorie and a stroll down this famous promenade is a must for a traveller visiting Mussoorie. The Mall extends from the Library Bazaar or the Gandhi Chowk and ends at the Clock Tower where the Landour Bazaar starts. Lined with shops selling trinkets, wood carvings, gift items, brass statues, Tibetan prayer wheels, wooden boxes and ceramic vases, the Mall is surely a place where time flies. The hand carved oak wood walking sticks sold here are quite popular among tourists. The Mall is also an excellent place to try different types of cuisine as many of famous eateries, cafes and restaurants are located here.

Gun Hill is the second highest peak of Mussoorie, which can be reached either by a Ropeway ride or can be negotiated by bridle path which forks-off from Mall Road near Kutchery and to reach here it takes about 20 minutes. The Ropeway distance is only 400 meters. Gun Hill offers a beautiful panoramic view of the Himalayan ranges and the Doon Valley. Municipal Garden, 2 km away (walking distance) is a picnic spot with an artificial mini lake that offers boating facilities. Childer’s Lodge is the highest Peak of Mussoorie near Lal Tibba and is 5 km from the Tourist Office.

Camel’s Back Road

Camel’s Back Road is another interesting highlight of Mussoorie. It starts from Kulri Bazaar near Rink Hall and ends at Library Bazaar covering a total distance of about 3 km. A walk or horse ride here is charming. The road is great to enjoy the lovely views of the setting Sun.

Jharipani Falls, 8 km away on Mussoorie-Jharipani Road and Bhatta Falls, 7 km away on Mussoore-Dehradun Road are two beautiful waterfalls, besides the famous Kempty Falls, which is 15 km from Mussoorie and is on the Yamunotri Road. The Kempty Waterfall has the distinction of being the biggest and prettiest waterfall located in the beautiful valley. Bathing at the foot of the Kempty Falls is fun and refreshing for children and adults alike.

Religiously inclined can visit Nag Devta Temple on Cart Mackenjie Road, 6 km away from Mussoorie. Mussoorie Lake is a newly developed picnic spot, situated on Mussoorie- Dehradun road and is about 6 km from Mussoorie. Van Chetna Kendra, on Tehri bye pass road is another beautiful picnic spot. The other places of tourist interest include Sir George Everest House (6 km away), Jwalaji Temple (9 km away) and Clouds End, a beautiful bungalow built in 1838 by a British Major.

Dhanaulti

Places Nearby
Nag Tibba 55 km away is an ideal spot for trekking. Dhanolti on the Mussoorie-Tehri Road is 25 km away, popular for its deodar forest and scenic views. Surkhanda Devi Temple, perched on a hill, 35 km away on the Mussoorie-Tehri Road is the site where the head of Shiva's consort Parvati fell. The temple is stiff 2 km climb from the road head.

By Rail: Dehradun is the nearest railway station, 34 km away.

By Road: Good roads connect Mussoorie to nearby towns and cities. Regular bus service is available from Delhi, Dehradun and other nearby cities.
