| Places to see | Places to stay | How to reach | Fast Facts |

Getting drenched in the rains amid green conifer forests, blooming plum and apple orchards with the mighty Himalayas as a companion, Mukteshwar in the rains is all about having a good time with a hot cup of tea and being so close to nature that you can listen to the pitter-patter of the raindrops.

Mukteshwar

Located at an altitude of 2286 mts, Mukteshwar is a respected hill station in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand. A quite serene and picturesque town surrounded by thick coniferous forests and offering some of the spectacular views of the Himalayan range, Mukteshwar was earlier known for the (founded in 1893 by the British) before its pleasant weather turned this secluded mountain hamlet into a favorite holiday destination.

The picture postcard hill station is also associated with the legend of Shiva who it is said gifted immortality or Mukti to a demon that he slew. The Mukteshwar Temple dedicated to the Lord Shiva is the crowning glory of the town as is the mighty Himalayan range that forms a picture postcard backdrop and the various conifer and pine trees which are home to a rich and diverse flora and fauna.

Places to see in Mukteshwar
Mukteshwar Temple

As far as sightseeing is concerned Mukteshwar doesn’t have much to offer which in a way is a blessing in disguise for it lets you enjoy the beauty of nature. There is a century old Shiva Temple, popularly known as the Mukteshwar Temple located on top of a hill which attracts a lot of devotees during the annual Shivratri festival. A few meters (250mts) from the Mukteshwar Temple is the Chauti Jaali – a rocky cliff jutting 500 ft out from the hill and offering splendid views of the mountains and of the town of Ramgarh as well. There is also a small but dangerous hole in the cliff and it is said that if one managed to make a parikarma through it, alltheir wishes will be fulfilled. However, one needs to be very careful about it, a single miss-step and you bade the world good bye.

Night Safari
& Adventure Sports
Those interested in wildlife, night safari is an exciting activity for sightings of leopards, jungle cats etc. Most of the resorts offer a night safari packages so make sure to ask for it before making your booking.  Same is the case with adventure sports like trekking and mountain climbing. One of the best trek is to Lamhanga waterfall located some 5-7 km from Mukteshwar.

More than a century old Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI) is another place worth visiting. A beautiful colonial style structure, the institute besides having one of the best veterinary hospitals in the area also takes care of the animals and birds of the Mukteshwar forest. Still, nothing can beat this small hill station as far as the views of the Himalaya range are concerned. Here one can enjoy 180 degree uninterrupted view of the Himalayan snow peaks namely the Neelkantha - named after Lord Shiva - the three pronged peaks of the Trishul or the 'trident of the Shiva', Nandaghunti or the 'Veil of the Goddess', Nandadevi, the goddess of bliss & the second highest peak in India and the five-pronged Panchchuli on a clear sunny day.

Places to see around Mukteshwar
Ramgarh
There are quite a few places around Mukteshwar that make for a good day trip and the beauty is that they are not too far like Sitla (just 9 km away) and Sonapani (8 km away). Sitla is popularly known for Sitla Estate, which is home to wildlife enthusiast Vikram Maira. Sonapani is a wonderful place to enjoy the rustic feel of Kumaon. Ramgarh, 26 km from Mukteshwar is a quaint town where Noble laureate Rabindra Nath Tagore started writing Gitanjali. Here you can visit Tagore Point, which is where Tagore stayed (the house is in ruins now).  Not too from the Tagore Point is Devisthan (in village Umagarh), the summer home of late poet Mahadevi Verma.
