Monsoon Getaways from Delhi or Chandigarh - Kasauli
| Places to see | Places to stay | How to reach | Fast Facts |

Monsoons in the hills mean innumerable waterfalls and rivulets that come tumbling down through the narrow creeks. Rains in the hills also mean uprooted trees, broken roads and landslides but the rainy season also mean piping hot chai and pakoras, wood-fried corns and dance of trees. For many it may mean a cup of coffee and a good book... imagination surely goes wild when it rains in the hills. If this is what you wish to experience come to Kasauli in the rains.

kasauli

Rainy season in Kasauli is a mixed bag of experiences. It may drizzle, pour or it may rain cats and dogs in Kasauli but the experience is simply ethereal. Being a small town, Kasauli offers a complete relaxing holiday experience. Tucked in the hills of Himachal Pradesh Kasauli was developed by the British as a healing centre for the adjoining cantonment of Sabathu. Just as tranquil Kasauli helped many a soldier regain fighting form all those years ago, its salubrious climes today enable tired souls to rejuvenate, no matter when you go there.

Kasauli derives its name from the kasool flower and has managed to keep its beauty in tact unlike Shimla and other popular hill stations in India that has succumbed to the commercialisation. And the credit for keeping the charm intact goes to the hill station’s building laws, which are strictly enforced here. Both local government authorities and the Society for Protection of Kasauli ensure that no major construction take place. Even cutting off a single tree or renovating an old building has to be done in strict accordance with the building bye-laws. The laws here make it very difficult for building projects costing over Rs 50 lakh to be passed easily.

Places to see in Kasauli
Kasauli

Half of Kasauli’s charm lies in the fact that there is little to do in Kasauli. Apt for those, who just want to relax, enjoy lovely views and want to have a good time. Kasauli doesn’t have a touristy feel and one of the best things to do here is to take a stroll through the town, from the Lower Mall to the Upper Mall, and around the Sanatorium. Views, such as Shimla View, have been built at different points — ledges with railings that overlook the Himalayan peaks in the distance but in the monsoons, you’ll have an overcast sky and clouds for company. Christ Church, believes to be the oldest (built in 1853) in Himachal Pradesh and is worth to visit. The Sunday service takes place at 9.30 am and is open to tourists on weekends. It is near the bus stand. Just a few minutes walk from the church will take you to a Cemetery maintained by the church. The tombstones here date back to the 1850s and earlier.

Baba Balak Nath Shrine, Kasauli

The other places worth visiting include Baba Balak Nath Shrine, known as the granter of wishes especially it is believed that prayers for an offspring offered here will be granted; and the Brahma Kumari Meditation Centre that offers a free basic course in meditation.
