Monsoon Getaways from Mumbai - Karjat Hills

It is not without any reason that many, who love rains and the complete package that comes with it head to Karjat. An ideal getaway, Karjat wears a refreshing green look during the monsoons. The paddy fields stretch from Karjat right up to the base of some of the surrounding hills. There are waterfalls, lovely small streams and rivulets that gush down the hillside. There may be light drizzle or heavy downpour, the area looks stunning and as the rain subsides, nearby hills gets engulfed in the thin mist that blows with the flow of the wind. And when the sky clears, you get a glimpse of the magnificent hills in the distance - forts, plateaus, gentle spurs and steep cliffs - and sometimes, nature’s fury - a landslide.

Karjat

Karjat is just a hopping distance from Mumbai and it makes for a great escape from the city’s daily grind. Located on the banks of the River Ulhas, Karjat is a lovely weekend destination with verdant fields that are surrounded by low green-topped hills. Karjat is just not a plain Vanila destination, it has many other facets to it. And one of the exciting highlights of Karjat is that one can indulge in a number of adventure activities here.

Ulhas Valley

Ulhas Valley is the place to enjoy breathtaking views during monsoons, when innumerable waterfalls make for a scenic delight and the whole area looks wrapped in a green sheet. Bhor Ghat has a historical connect as it was the ancient trade route that used to connect Panvel, Revdanda, Choul on the Konkan Coast. Kondheshwar Temple in Sandshi is known for its beautiful temple architecture. Those interested in trekking can head to Bahiri Cave. The other places of interest include Nakhind and Chanderi.

Kondana Caves not too far from Karjat is an interesting place to visit, just drive or take an auto to Kondana Village. From the village, follow an easy trail to the ruins of the rock-cut caves of Kondana. Vanvihar is a simple lodge at Kondana Village is where you can have a hearty meal. They also provide camping facilities.

Karjat is an excellent place to enjoy adventure sports, one can try a host of  adventure activities in Karjat. Trekking is the most common and popular adventure activity in Karjat. One can head to various villages on trekking, you can trek to Khandpe, Sandshi and Kondiwade villages. All these villages are well connected by State Transport bus services and are within easy distance of about 15km from Karjat. Rafting is another popular activity and it’s possible to go rafting on the upper sections of Ulhas River, near Karjat. Since this is purely a seasonal activity (July-September), the rafting trips are rainfall dependent.
